The 22-year-old switch-hitting, minor-league-gold-glove-winning infielder is hitting .312/.395/.547/136 wRC+ in his first go at Triple-A Iowa, pairing superlative contact volume with new-found contact quality. This hasn’t just been a story about a pretty good prospect putting up pretty good numbers; it’s been about a pretty good prospect becoming a VERY good prospect by fundamentally changing the nature of his contact at the plate.
How good could Pedro Ramirez be in the big leagues? Pretty hard to say at this point, but I’m comfortable with the idea that the ceiling is much higher now than we previously thought. He rapidly became a top-100 prospect for a reason.
That said, how will Craig Counsell and the Cubs actually use him, given that his two primary positions are third base (Alex Bregman, Matt Shaw) and second base (Nico Hoerner, Matt Shaw)? And where the DH/bench group already includes guys you theoretically want getting at bats (Michael Conforto, Moises Ballesteros)? If there isn’t an injury, it might be the case that Ramirez is going to be one of the new first-line options off the bench, replacing a guy like Shaw or Ballesteros (either on the depth chart or on the roster).
In recent days, Ramirez has started to see some time in left field, so that expands his utility. Though, again, you have guys like Shaw and Conforto there in a reserve capacity, too.
I am really excited to see what the plan is, even if I know this is probably not a situation where Ramirez is going to be starting every day. He’s probably just going to help where he can, and start learning the big league ropes. (Which, in turn, COULD give the Cubs more options at the Trade Deadline – or at least more comfort in trading away certain other players who keep popping up in rumors.)
