U.S. National Championships qualifier Nicholas Liberty has announced his verbal commitment to swim and study at Boston University beginning in the fall of 2027. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am honored to announce my verbal commitment to Boston University to continue my academic and athletic career. I want to thank my family, friends, coaches, teammates, and everyone else who has supported me along the way. A special thank you to Coach James and Coach Stephen for giving me this incredible opportunity. Go Terriers!
A senior at Sherwood High School in Rockville, Maryland, Liberty has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming team since his freshman year. He also trains year-round with Rockville Montgomery Swim Club, where he primarily specializes in distance freestyle.
The 2025-26 short course season saw Liberty drop about ten and a half seconds in the 1650 free, over three seconds in the 500 free, and more than two seconds in the 200 free. He clocked his current lifetime bests in the two shorter distances at the NCSA Spring Championships in mid-March, where he finished eighth in the 1650 (15:23.53), 40th in the 500 free (4:33.43), and 79th in an off-event, the 400 IM (4:06.33).
On the high school scene, Liberty placed third in the 500 free (4:34.29) and sixth in the 200 free (1:44.87 – PB) at the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) 3A/4A State Championships a month earlier. He also helped Sherwood place seventh in the 400 free relay (49.46 split) and eighth in the 200 medley relay (23.14 split). It was his third career top-eight finish in an individual event, after he posted a career-high fifth place in the 500 free as a freshman.
Beyond the short course pool, Liberty qualified for the USA Swimming National Championships over the summer, which doubled as the sole qualifying opportunity for Team USA’s World Championship roster. There, he swam primary and off events alike, finishing 36th in the 1500 free (15:59.37), 77th in the 200 free (2:00.35) and 88th in the 50 free (27.00).

Liberty’s current career best in the 1650 free would have finished fourth at the 2026 conference championships, and he is just over half a second shy of the 4:32.92 needed to earn a second swim in the 500 free.
Liberty joins sprint freestyle and butterfly specialist Nathaniel Kern in committing to the university’s class of 2031 so far.
