Two Bears Offensive Linemen Have Been Working With a Pro Bowl Left Tackle This Offseason

Perhaps help from a Pro Bowl left tackle could help solve the Chicago Bears’ biggest offensive line concern going into the 2026 NFL season.

Terron Armstead, a retired NFL offensive lineman with a Pro Bowl pedigree, says he has been working with Braxton Jones and Theo Benedet — two of the three known combatants set to do battle for the opportunity to protect quarterback Caleb Williams’ blindside in Week 1. In this snippet with FOX 32 Chicago’s Cassie Carlson, Armstead talks about working with a pair of Chicago’s left tackle prospects:

I find it interesting that Terron Armstead is working with Benedet and Jones. Armstead had a solid career as a pro, playing 135 games (131 starts) in 12 seasons with the New Orleans Saints (2013-2021) and Miami Dolphins (2022). A native of downstate Belleville, Armstead went from being a third-round pick (75th overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft to being one of the league’s standout blockers. Armstead made five Pro Bowls in six seasons between 2018 and 2023. The only non-Pro Bowl campaign in those six years came in 2021, when his season was shortened to eight games because of an injury.

The way I see it, Armstead is a great player to learn from if you’re trying to figure out life as a left tackle in the NFL. Moreover, Terron Armstead is a player whose brain is worth picking because of his long-standing history with Bears Offensive Line Coach Dan Roushar. Armstead played for Roushar while with the Saints from 2016 to 2020. Can you think of a better way to figure out how to get a leg up in the left tackle race than by getting some tips from a guy who was a Pro Bowler under Roushar’s watch?

All eyes will be on the Bears’ offense when training camp opens up this summer. And you better believe there will be a hyperfixation on what is happening on the offensive line, specifically at left tackle. Braxton Jones and Theo Benedet have a golden opportunity ahead of them this season. Jones is motivated after getting a reality check in 2025. A four-year starter in Chicago, Jones re-signed with the team on a one-year “prove it” deal back in March. I look forward to seeing how he embraces the challenges ahead.

And, yes, I did mean challenges as in the plural. That is because (at least) two other offensive linemen are aiming for that starting role.

Theo Benedet started eight games for the Bears in 2025. His taking over for Jones after the team’s early-season bye was a mixed bag. There were some moments in pass protection that were cringeworthy, but Benedet’s performance as a run blocker was strong. Overall, the Canadian-born offensive lineman put forth an admirable effort in 2025 and has played his way into consideration for a starting job in 2026. And let’s not forget Jedrick Wills Jr., a top-10 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft who could be a post-hype sleeper candidate.
