Lewis Hamilton has once again been left to rue Ferrari’s execution after a frustrating qualifying session at Monza, with the seven-time world champion admitting that a disjointed Q3 left him fighting for position rather than pole.
Hamilton entered qualifying with genuine optimism after Ferrari had shown encouraging pace in final practice.
Yet the Italian outfit’s hopes of delivering a memorable home pole quickly became tangled in traffic, timing and tyre preparation, leaving Hamilton perilously close to a Q2 elimination, and ultimately fifth at the end of Q3.
A post-session penalty for Oscar Piastri subsequently promoted Hamilton to fourth on Sunday’s grid, but it did little to disguise what he regarded as another missed opportunity.
Ferrari loses its way when it matters
Hamilton's frustration was particularly pointed because he felt the car itself had been strong enough to deliver considerably more. After a clean Q1, however, Ferrari struggled to reproduce that performance when the pressure increased.
"It was definitely very, very tough," Hamilton told Sky Sports. "The car felt really good in practice, and then in qualifying I didn't change anything, so I felt good going into Q1, and Q1 was solid.
"And then we sat and waited a very long time in the pit lane for the first run of Q2 and, for some reason, we just didn't have the pace. I'm not really sure why, whether it was tyre pressures, tyre temperature, whatever, so we need to look into that.
"Then the execution in Q3 was pretty bad, obviously. I ended up out in the middle of nowhere with nobody, and then, when you're following another car, you arrive faster, several kilometres faster into a corner, so the braking distances adjust."
It was a particularly damaging mistake at a circuit where the slipstream can be worth crucial hundredths of a second. Hamilton found himself isolated during his opening Q3 attempt, depriving him of the reference points and aerodynamic assistance that had become so important around Monza.
He admitted the resulting disruption effectively knocked him out of his rhythm.
"It's all about getting into a rhythm, and I got really out of rhythm for Q3 run one, and then Q3 run two was - it wasn't a terrible lap, but, as I said, references were all different, and we just ultimately didn't maximise it."
Leclerc admits Ferrari had more to give
Hamilton was not alone in experiencing a difficult afternoon. Charles Leclerc also endured a nervy qualifying session, surviving Q2 by just 0.008 seconds as Ferrari flirted with the prospect of seeing both cars eliminated before the final shootout.
"It's been a big struggle, especially when we arrived in Q2," said Leclerc.
"We were nearly out with both cars, but to be honest, we've had many issues in the background that we had to deal with.
"I'm pretty sure that if we speak in the paddock, everybody had some issues because it's one of the most difficult tracks to optimise the power unit on, but that's not an excuse."
Leclerc nevertheless had nothing but praise for Pierre Gasly, who stunned the paddock by taking his maiden pole for Alpine.
"Pierre and Alpine did everything perfectly, and I think they surprised everybody in the paddock by doing a perfect job. I'm very happy for Pierre, by the way, but now it's our job to try and recover what we kind of lost on our own today.
"I don't think pole position was possible, but one place better was probably doable, and we need to target maximising everything, and today we didn't."

The SF-26 appeared capable of more, but once again the Scuderia failed to turn potential into performance when it counted – leaving Hamilton and Leclerc with a recovery mission rather than the front-row start their home crowd had hoped for.
