Chicago Cubs Lineup: Miguel Amaya Over Matt Shaw at DH?

CUBS LINEUP — There’s no salvaging the moment, as the Cubs have already dropped their fourth straight series and two games in a row to the Brewers, but it would still be nice to win today before an off-day tomorrow. So, please, Cubs. Don’t let us down again.

Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for the finale against the Brewers at Wrigley Field.

    Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Nico Hoerner, 2B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, LF Seiya Suzuki, RF Carson Kelly, C Michael Busch, 1B Dansby Swanson, SS Miguel Amaya, DH Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF

Don’t want Ian Happ as your cleanup hitter? Ta-da! He’s not!

    He’s batting third…

With a lefty, Kyle Harrison, on the mound tonight in Chicago, Craig Counsell has shifted around his Cubs lineup, moving Michael Busch down to sixth while moving Bregman, Happ, and Suzuki up.

The Cubs starting catcher, Carson Kelly, gets the nod behind the plate tonight, batting fifth in the order. And their other catcher, Miguel Amaya, comes in to act as the designated hitter … which is a very odd choice with Matt Shaw around.

Perhaps there’s some matchup explanation that makes sense, but it feels more likely that something is up (like Shaw is dealing with some sort of nagging or minor injury). Very strange exclusion, otherwise.

Amaya is hitting lefties well this year, but so is Shaw. And Shaw has a harder time finding at-bats. Again, I have to imagine there’ll be some obvious explanation at some point. Because you don’t usually want to start both catchers if you don’t have to, even with Moises Ballesteros available in a pinch.

    Milwaukee Brewers Lineup:

Jackson Chourio, LF Brice Turang, 2B William Contreras, C Christian Yelich, DH Garrett Mitchell, CF Jake Bauers, 1B Sal Frelick, RF Joey Ortiz, SS David Hamilton, 3B

    Pitching Matchup:

    Chicago Cubs: Edward Cabrera, RHP

Although they were far from perfect, the first seven starts of Edward Cabrera’s career with the Cubs were productive. He had back-to-back scoreless games to start the year, and followed them up by allowing exactly 3 earned runs in five straight, averaging roughly 6.0 innings (or a quality start) throughout that stretch.

But the last two games have gone sideways.

The first, against the Rangers, featured five earned runs on seven hits over 5.0 IP against the Rangers, and the second featured three earned runs (and three walks) over just 4.2 IP against the White Sox.

So now, through nine games, the Cubs’ big offseason pitching addition, who got even more critical to the success of the team after all the injuries, has a 4.06 ERA (4.38 xERA, 4.51 FIP) through 51.0 IP.

Beggars (us, with no other great options) can’t be choosers, but I do wish it were going better.

Maybe tonight, Cabrera can shut down the Brewers and at least give us a better ending to this ugly stretch before the off-day tomorrow.

    Milwaukee Brewers: Kyle Harrison, LHP

You know what a struggling offense does NOT need? To face a guy with a 2.09 ERA and a 30% strikeout rate through eight starts. But we are Cubs fans, and this is real life. So that’s what you’re gonna get tonight at Wrigley Field in Kyle Harrison.

Of course, Harrison was never this good before coming to the Brewers. In three seasons prior to 2026, his ERA ranged from 4.04 to 4.56, with peripherals in generally in the same range. Now, he’s got that sterling bottom line number, plus a 3.32 xERA and 2.88 FIP that make it look believable.

Note: It’s not like he came out of nowhere; this is a former top-30 prospect in MLB. But naturally, he was a posty hype guy … until he showed up in Milwaukee.

The only knock on Harrison is that most of his starts aren’t particularly long, but whose starts are these days? Well, that, and his groundball rate is pretty tiny, but … the wind is blowing in tonight, and his barrel + hard hit rates are both tiny too. So. Yeah.

Harrison is primarily a fastball-curveball guy, with his heater sitting around 95 MPH. But he’ll occasionally mix in a changeup, as well. He gets a lot of swing-and-miss out of the zone and isn’t an obvious lefty/righty split guy.
