User Experience

One of the things I truly appreciate about the Onkyo speakers is how easy they are to set up. The two speakers are connected by a speaker cable (provided) and the main speaker plugs into power. You can connect to them via Bluetooth, which makes the setup very, very simple. I chose to connect my computer to them using a USB-C cable to avoid any latency or control issues. I actually connected them to a switch so that I can use them with both my Mac Studio and a gaming PC. It works flawlessly for that.

The ports are clearly labeled and logically positioned, making cable connections quick and frustration-free. My only real usability complaint involved switching between input sources, since the on-device control requires tapping the volume knob located on the back of the speaker. The included remote makes this process much more convenient, but users who frequently change inputs may find the rear-mounted control somewhat awkward to reach in a desktop setup. Fortunately, the speakers transition between sources smoothly, with only a brief delay that never felt disruptive during everyday use.

The old speakers excelled as a compact near-field desktop speaker focused primarily on casual music listening, but the GX-30ARC is designed to deliver a fuller and more versatile listening experience for gaming, media consumption, and multi-device desktop setups. The most noticeable improvement was in the low-end response. The GX-30ARC uses significantly larger 4-inch woofers compared to my previous speakers’ 2.75-inch drivers, which gives the Onkyo speakers a fuller, deeper sound with noticeably more presence in bass-heavy music, games, and movies. Audio also felt more spacious and room-filling overall, while the older speakers sounded more limited to close-range listening.

The GX-30ARC also benefits from a bi-amped design that separately powers the tweeters and woofers, helping maintain clarity and balance even at higher volumes. High frequencies remained crisp without sounding overly sharp, while dialogue and instrument separation felt cleaner and more defined during everyday use. By comparison, my previous speakers still has advantages in compactness and simplicity, especially for smaller desks, but the GX-30ARC delivers a larger and more capable sound that better matches its feature-rich, entertainment-focused design.

There are a couple of things that caught me off guard when I started using them. First, the stands have a walnut-style finish, but they are made of plastic or a plastic-like compound. I thought they were real wood and was a bit let down when I discovered the hard plastic material that was used for them. They are functional and do allow the speakers to sit at a proper height and angle for optimal listening, but I wish they had been real wood.

The second surprise was how quickly and how often the speakers would go into standby mode. It took a little bit of research to find out that the firmware needed to be updated in order to get the ability to disable standby mode. To update the firmware, you need to load the file onto a USB-C flash drive formatted as FAT32. Then, you plug it into the USB-C port on the back of the main speaker. There is a tiny status light on the back of the speaker just above the USB-C port that will blink while the update is happening. Once it’s done, you can remove your flash drive and you should be able to disable standby mode. I have to admit that I was a little annoyed with the speakers because of standby mode. Yes, I can just turn them back on with the remote, but I would rather not have to do that. I’d prefer for them to be “always on” instead of asleep. So, I was grateful to unlock that option with the firmware update.

Finally, the speaker cable could be longer. I have an 80-inch desktop and the cable is just barely long enough for the speakers to sit on either end of the desk. For proper cable management and optimal placement of the speakers, it would be nice if it was a longer cable.

Conclusion

They deliver a fuller and more immersive listening experience than many compact desktop speakers while still maintaining a relatively small footprint.
