McKellen, 86, was asked what the worst advice he received was in his interview with The Guardian. He revealed a lunch he had with SirAlec Guinness.

"He had heard about my work to establish Stonewall – a lobby group to present to the government and the world at large the case for treating UK lesbians and gays equally under the law with the rest of the population," the Lord of the Rings actor said.
"He thought it somewhat unseemly for an actor to dabble in public or political affairs and advised me, sort of pleaded with me, to withdraw," McKellen continued. "Advice from an older generation, which I didn’t follow."
Guinness was 25 years older than McKellen. He was also bisexual, according to biographies released after his death in 2000. The Obi-Wan Kenobi actor was charged with a homosexual act in a public lavatory in 1946 and gave the police a fake name, according to BBC. People who knew him directly knew about his sexuality.
The actor's choice to keep that side of himself private would clash against McKellen's decision. McKellen said on The Dick Cavett Show that he came out to be "honest."
"But your life is acting," the host added.
"Indeed, and that's why I think so many gay men who are in the closet are such good actors professionally," he replied. However, he said not coming out would hurts romantic relationships and themselves.
