Good morning, Bleacher Nation. What a beautiful morning it is, huh? For the second time this season, the Cubs have won 10 straight games! It is a truly remarkable run this team has been on, and it’s been such a pleasure to watch day-after-day. Can’t wait to watch Edward Cabrera face off against Jack Leiter later tonight.
The run this Cubs team has been on has become the history-making type. After last night’s 10th-straight W — their second 10-game win streak in less than 40 games — they join the 1955 Dodgers, 1941 Cardinals, 1887 St. Louis Browns, and 1880 Chicago White Stockings (now Cubs) in achieving such a feat. The depth of the lineup and the sturdiness of the pitching staff have been on full display, and last night was no different. I’ve held back on firmly thinking this team has a special something to it like the 2016 team did, but I’m not doing that any longer. No, I’m not guaranteeing a World Series, but this team is one that I firmly believe we’re going to remember fondly for a long time. The Cubs are on pace to win 112 games
"Our pitching staff is just better because our defense is so good. Our pitching staff can breathe a little bit because our offense is playing so well. Our pitching staff is incredibly deep because our coaches are so solid."Ben Brown on how the Cubs help their pitching staff ? pic.twitter.com/GlbDZoBk33
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) May 9, 2026 Overall, the Cubs defense ranks 5th in DRS, second in Def Rating (FanGraphs), and first in OAA, which I choose to believe is the most important because it has the Cubs first. Michael Conforto got the start at DH last night, hit second in the lineup, and stayed red-hot, going 2-for-4 with a walk, raising his slash line to .375/.480/.675. Brett recently wrote about the value Conforto is providing despite his modest role, but is Craig Counsell now seeking ways to get his bat in the lineup a bit more? If that’s the case, it won’t be an easy task given how well Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Moises Ballesteros are all hitting. Conforto’s hot bat has no doubt been a big part of the story of this incredible run the Cubs are on, but I don’t think it’s worth forcing the issue with him at the expense of at-bats for any of the regulars or Matt Shaw. It’s a good problem to have, but the solution should be the status quo."He had a big day. The at-bats that he's provided in limited playing time, it's just really impressive."Craig Counsell on Michael Conforto's production ? pic.twitter.com/0Sj5n9bzxO
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) May 7, 2026 Ethan Roberts returned from the IL yesterday and pitched a scoreless 9th inning. Meanwhile, Hunter Harvey suffered a setback with a stress reaction in his triceps during his rehab, provoking what will be a month-long shutdown. Thanks to Caleb Thielbar, though, yesterday ultimately became a one-step-back, two-steps-forward day of news for Cubs’ relievers.Caleb Thielbar threw a bullpen today, and Craig Counsell said it went very well. The plan moving forward: He'll have another touch and feel in Texas Sunday, then throw a live during the Atlanta series. The next step would be a rehab stint around the time of the White Sox series.

— Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) May 9, 2026 The Iowa Cubs outscored the Columbus Clippers, 13-12, last night. Pedro Ramirez and Johnathan Long both went 3-for-4 in the win, raising their batting averages to .312 and .299.Jonny Long and his new mustache have a three hit game! pic.twitter.com/94rjtYAehE
— Iowa Cubs (@IowaCubs) May 9, 2026 Some tough news from Principal Park in Des Moines last night, despite the win…The injuries just keep coming. Vince Velasquez was making his first appearance with the @IowaCubs since his outing at Dodger Stadium on April 25. He just went down in a heap after throwing a pitch in the top of the ninth. Immediately stood up and walked into the dugout.
