Goodwill Industries in San Diego and Imperial counties are expanding their sustainability efforts by accepting soft plastics for recycling at select donation centers throughout the two counties.
The nonprofit agency has been “Making Good Happen” since 1930, and it is well-known for its retail stores and outlet centers which offer a variety of used merchandise, including clothing, home decor, housewares, furniture and much more, in order to generate revenue for free employment programs and services.
Now, community members are also learning that Goodwill is committed to making good happen for the planet.
Dave Wright has lived in the College Area for 30 years and is an avid composter and recycler.
Upon hearing about the Goodwill program he said, “I have been recycling since I was a Cub Scout, collecting newspapers, bottles and cans to raise money for causes. Now, I am especially excited to learn that plastic bags, one of the last not easily compostable items filling our landfill can be recycled and made useful again.”
Soft plastics like dry-cleaning bags, grocery and retail bags, bubble wrap and air pillows, usually end up in landfills or they pollute the environment. This initiative will help divert plastic materials that are not collected as part of curbside recycling and will repurpose them.
Through Goodwill’s soft plastics program, these materials are collected and sent to a specialized recycling partner, where they are transformed into durable products such as pallets, decking, and outdoor furniture.
“This program addresses a critical gap in local recycling,” said Toni Giffin, president and chief executive officer of Goodwill San Diego. “By leveraging our existing donation infrastructure, we’re making it easier for the community to recycle soft plastics responsibly while supporting Goodwill’s mission of providing job training and employment to people with disabilities and other barriers to employment.”
Community members are encouraged to take their clean and dry soft plastics to participating Goodwill locations. Items should be free of food residue and moisture to ensure they can be properly recycled.
Acceptable soft plastics include:
Plastic film and wrap Single-use grocery and retail bags Bubble wrap and air pillows Newspaper sleeves Case overwrap (such as water or soda packaging) Other stretchable plastic packagingMore information and a list of participating soft plastics recycling locations can be found here.
