David Warner dragged into fresh controversy after lawyer’s explosive drink-driving comments

Former Australian opener David Warner has yet again found himself in a fresh controversy after shocking drink-driving details came out during a court hearing in Australia. The explosive developments have sparked massive debate, as David Warner has only recently been rebuilding his image after several controversies in his career.

Warner, known for his fearless batting and aggressive attitude on the field, is now facing serious trouble off the field. His drink-driving case has also raised fresh questions about his captaincy future with Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL).

As reported by AAP, the police said that the incident happened on April 5 in Sydney after Warner drove his car following a gathering with friends on Easter Sunday. Police stopped his vehicle in the eastern part of the city after he reportedly failed to properly stop during a roadside alcohol check.

The police officials later took Warner to Maroubra Police Station for another breath test, and the alcohol reading was allegedly 0.104, which is more than twice the legal limit allowed for drivers in New South Wales. After the test, Warner was charged with mid-range drink driving.

Warner did not personally attend the first court hearing at Waverley Local Court on Thursday, May 7, as the matter was postponed for June 24.

However, the Australian star’s lawyer made it clear outside court that the cricketer admitted his actions were a major mistake and is expected to plead guilty in the coming hearings.

He knows what he did was wrong: David Warner's lawyer

The lawyer admitted Warner should have taken another option instead of driving himself home after having a glass of wine. The legal team also questioned the time gap between the roadside stop and the second breath test at the police station.

He claimed that Warner had consumed his final drink just 11 minutes before police stopped him, while the second breath test was reportedly conducted 52 minutes later at the police station.

David Warner's lawyer, Bobby Hill, said, “He knows what he did was wrong. He accepts that was a reckless decision, a foolish decision to get in his car instead of taking an Uber. It's not a crime to have a glass of wine on the day of the Lord's resurrection. In fact, some would consider that completely appropriate. His crime is, as I said, choosing a foolish plan A instead of a plan B.”

Hill added, “This case before the court is a reminder to everyone in the public about the dangers of self-assessments. I know David is looking forward to putting this matter behind him and focusing his efforts on re-contributing to those people in the community.”

David Warner’s BBL captaincy under threat after drink and drive controversy

The controversy has now put Warner under heavy public scrutiny once again. New South Wales has reportedly taken the matter seriously because of the strong anti-drunk-driving message promoted by the sport in Australia. It could affect Warner’s captaincy role with Sydney Thunder in the BBL.

Cricket NSW chief executive Lee Germon said, “The allegations are of course, concerning, and we take them very seriously. At Cricket NSW, we are strong advocates for safe driving, not drink-driving.”
