Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batting coach Dinesh Karthik spoke about the art of all-format batting and how former India skipper Virat Kohli was important to it.
Kohli is generally considered to be in a rare category of batters who have the skillset to perform consistently in all three formats of cricket - Tests, ODIs, and T20Is - at once. Kohli is one of only three batters to be ranked No. 1 on the ICC batting rankings in all three formats - albeit not simultaneously.
Karthik was talking to sports anchor Mayanti Langer on the RCB podcast. When asked about the skills required to succeed across all formats of the game, Karthik replied that there is too much variation across formats to be able to succeed in all of them with the same skillset.
"What it takes to do well in T20 is the complete polar opposite skills compared to what is required to do well in Test cricket. I don't think there will be too many 'all-format' batters or bowlers that will exist, " he said.
Langer pointed out that Kohli was among the rare class of batters who averaged over 50 in all three formats at once, to which Karthik responded that there will ever only be one Virat Kohli. "You're not going to find another Virat Kohli, I can promise you that. That is one for the folklore," Karthik concluded.
Virat Kohli in IPL 2026
Just like in 2024 and 2025, Virat Kohli is currently RCB's highest run-scorer in IPL 2026. Right now, he has 379 runs at an average of 54 and a strike rate of 165 in the tournament. This means that he is still the fifth-highest run-getter of IPL 2026 so far.
Kohli also held the Orange Cap on multiple occasions this year. He has also made 3 fifties with a highest score of 81 in the tournament. Kohli also has the joint-most fours in this tournament as well.
Kohli has developed a penchant for breaking records across his career, and that is true in IPL 2026 as well. Earlier this season, Kohli became the first player to make 9,000 runs in the IPL. He also entered the elusive 300 sixes in the IPL club that only contains Chris Gayle and Rohit Sharma apart from him.
RCB form in IPL 2026 and next match
RCB are currently placed second on the IPL 2026 points table. The defending champions have six wins from nine matches, giving them 12 points. RCB lost their last match as a spirited bowling performance from the Gujarat Titans inspired a batting collapse. The low target of 155 was never a real challenge for GT's batting in Ahmedabad.
RCB's next match will be against Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on May 7. LSG are struggling badly in the tournament, and RCB have already beaten the Rishabh Pant-led side once before in IPL 2026.
