The Ministry of Transport, represented by the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT), has signed a cooperation agreement with Germany’s Siemens Mobility to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study on extending the High-Speed Rail (HSR) network deeper into Alexandria.
The initiative aims to move beyond the current plan of terminating at stations on the city’s western outskirts.
Alexandria Governor, Ayman Attia, stated that this step aligns with the state’s strategy to enhance Intermodal transport integration and streamline commuter movement.
The study will explore adding new urban stations, potentially linking the HSR to Alexandria’s main “Misr Station” to facilitate transfers with conventional trains and the Alexandria Metro.
Alternatively, it may also explore a direct connection with the HSR Fourth Line, which spans from Abu Qir to Port Said.
Alexandria is currently set to host four stations along the HSR “Green Line”: Borg El Arab, Amreya, El Stad, and the Alexandria station presently under construction within the Lake Mariout area.
These stations are scheduled for handover and operation before the end of 2027.
The Deputy Head of the Transport and Communications Committee in the House of Representatives, Mohamed Moselhy, detailed that the HSR First Line (Sokhna – Alexandria – Alamein – Matrouh) is part of a broader 2,000 km network.
The first phase, covering 675 km with 23 stations, is designed to transport approximately one million passengers daily and 6.5 million tons of freight annually upon reaching full capacity.
Moselhy concluded that the addition of the Fourth Line (Port Said – Abu Qir) will further revolutionize the Egyptian transport ecosystem.
