For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Wisconsin high school state finalist Luke Thomas has announced his commitment to swim at Bucknell University beginning in the fall of 2026. He publicized the news in an email to SwimSwam, writing:

I am excited to finally announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at Bucknell University. I want to thank my parents, coaches, friends, and teammates for their love and support on this journey, and to Coach Dan for giving me this amazing opportunity. Go Bison!

A senior at Brookfield Central High School in Wisconsin, Thomas competed for his school’s varsity swimming and diving team all four years. He also trains year-round with Elmbrook Swim Club, where he primarily specializes in backstroke and freestyle.

Thomas kicked off the 2025–26 season in style at the IFLY A3 Midwest Challenge in October, beginning a six-month stretch that saw him drop more than five seconds in the 200 back, over two seconds in the 100 free, about a second and a half in the 200 free, just over half a second in the 50 free, and more than a second in the 100 back. At the meet, he clocked times of 21.54 in the 50 free, 47.14 in the 100 free, 50.11 in the 100 back, and 1:53.52 in the 200 back, the last of which still stands as his lifetime best.

Three months later, Thomas wrapped up his high school career at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Division I State Championships in February, where he had his best-ever showing at the meet. Individually, he placed fourth in the 100 free (46.09) and fifth in the 100 back (49.95), swimming his current personal bests, in addition to helping Brookfield to silver in the 400 free relay (46.64 split) and bronze in the 200 medley relay (23.18 leadoff). A two-year team captain, he helped lead the Barracudas to a second-place team finish, their best result since winning the state title in 2022.

He closed out the season at the NCSA Championships last month, clocking a lifetime best of 21.42 in the 50 free but sitting off his best times in his other primary events. His best placement came in the 50 back (23.64), where he touched 50th.

    Top SCY Times:

    50 Freestyle: 21.42 100 Freestyle: 46.09 200 Freestyle: 1:44.45 100 Backstroke: 49.95 200 Backstroke: 1:53.52

A Division I Mid-major program, Bucknell competes in the Patriot League, with the men’s team placing fifth out of 10 teams at this past season’s conference championships. Based on the results from the meet, Thomas’ lifetime bests in the 100 and 200 back would have landed in the ‘C’ finals, giving him a chance to score a few points for the Bisons. Meanwhile, it took times of 20.91, 45.64, and 1:40.76 to earn a second swim in the freestyles.

On the team’s projected 2026–27 depth chart, Thomas is slated to rank fourth in the 100 back, seventh in the 200 back, ninth in the 100 free, 10th in the 50 free, and 13th in the 200 free, brining some added depth to a roster that returns all of its scoring backstrokers from 2026, which includes two ‘B’ finalists in both the 100 and 200 back and a ‘C’ finalist in the 200 back.

Thomas holds the fastest 100 back time among the Bisons’ class of 2030 recruits. He joins Thomas Senfield (back, IM, & distance free), Josh Battison (back/middle-distance free), Sam Cavanaugh (fly, IM, & distance free), Edward Johnson (breast/IM), and Ben Pope (sprint free/fly) in the incoming class.
