According to Adam Schefter, the Denver Broncos checked in on Trey McBride.
Denver’s looking to bolster their roster for a Super Bowl run because the window is officially open.
So, if they’re exploring options at tight end where else may they look to trade for?
Denver Broncos checked in on Trey McBride
The Colorado boy coming home?
The Broncos can dream.
McBride is arguably the best tight end in the NFL today and his Arizona Cardinals are starting to fall apart. So it makes sense that some teams have checked in to try and trade for McBride. One of them is the Broncos per Schefter.
But according to the NFL insider, Arizona said they “have zero intention of trading” him away.
Hey, it makes sense. He’s a generational tight end and Arizona’s best player.
So if they’re not going to get McBride, who could Denver trade for?
Who could the Broncos trade for?
There are two positions George Paton, Sean Payton and the Broncos are looking to improve at the NFL trade deadline: tight end and running back.
Let’s explore who they could actually go and get.
Breece Hall
Hall is among the running back targets for the Broncos. He’s got big-play speed but he’s been very quiet on that front this year.
Hall’s been dealing with a quad injury and has missed the last five games for New York, though he has been medically cleared to play this week against the Broncos rival Kansas City Chiefs.
Because of the injury, he’s only run 51 times for 163 yards, a paltry 3.2 yards per carry average. That’s even worse than current Broncos back J.K. Dobbins; are we sure Hall would be an upgrade there?
Last year was much better for Hall; it was his first and only 1,000-yard season in the NFL, with a 4.4 YPC and he scored 4 touchdowns as well. Can he regain that play this season?
New York likely wants around a 3rd-round pick for Hall, but Aaron Glenn said recently they have no intention in trading the running back.
Jonathan Taylor
Taylor is by far the best running back of the bunch mentioned here who the Broncos could trade for.
But the Colts, despite being in the middle of a fire sale, know they don’t have to trade him. They’ve said as much. They already traded guard Quentin Nelson and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to NFC West teams, but still remain reluctant to trade away their superstar running back.
According to Ian Rapoport they want a “CMC package” which was a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th-round pick for Taylor. That’s a really steep price.
But Taylor is in his prime and locked up for this year and the next two as well. He’s arguably the best running back in the NFL today, with superb vision and breakaway speed. He has 18 10-plus yard runs and five 20-plus yard runs this season, and has scored 8 touchdowns in eight games this season.
He would revolutionize the Broncos backfield but seems too steep a price to actually land.
Tony Pollard
Pollard seems more likely than Taylor, though he’s not quite as explosive or dazzling.
Still, Pollard is a solid back. He’s currently averaging 4.5 yards per carry for the Tennessee Titans and is on pace to run for a fifth straight 1,000-yard season. He also ran for a wild 246 yards and five touchdowns in his last two games.
Tennessee has said they haven’t listened to any calls on Pollard, but now they are saying they “maybe” want a 4th-round pick for him. If that’s true, it’s almost a no-brainer for the Broncos.
He is in the last year of his deal with Tennessee, so the Broncos would have to try an extend him or possibly just try him out for the rest of the season.
Dallas Goedert
Of the tight ends in this piece, Goedert seems like the most plausible for Denver to go and get. He’s 31 and on the floundering Eagles; they may be willing to move him if the price is right.
He’s having a down year compared to 2025; he currently has 26 receptions for 258 yards and 2 touchdowns. The receptions and yards are on par with last season but he had 11 scores last year.
It’s good to note his yards and receptions are both more than all of the Broncos tight ends combined to this point. Albert Breer says “Goedert could be had” but no word on what the Eagles would want in return for him. A Day 3 pick seems likely.
Sam LaPorta
LaPorta, like McBride, is a bit of a stretch but would also be a player that would have the potential to completely change the Broncos offense.
The Detroit Lions are currently 5-2 and still in the hunt for a Super Bowl, so they seem less incentivized to trade him away. However, three weeks ago he came out and said he was upset they haven’t extended him yet.
“Like last year, whatever it was, Week 9, Week 10, I break my f—ing back for the team. And then I’m going out there this year and I’m balling, and maybe they’re just not showing the love,” LaPorta said. “…I’m going to continue to do my thing and ball out, and in three months, if I don’t get to wear the Honolulu blue and play for the Lions anymore, it’s going to be all good. I’ll go get paid somewhere else.”
The next day he came out and said “I want to play for this team.”
LaPorta is in the last year of his deal, so Denver would need to extend him if they traded for him, and he’d likely cost at least a 2nd-round pick. That’s probably too steep as George Paton loves his draft picks, he rarely trades them away. And again Detroit seems content with keeping him and figuring out his contract later this season.
This week the Broncos (6-2) are in Carolina to face the Panthers (3-4) and new defensive coordinator Todd Wash. Denver has a chance to win a fifth straight game going into the bye week and continue to keep their grasp on the AFC West lead.
