Alabama softball falls to Tennessee 2-1 in weekend series

Alabama softball faltered after a strong opening game, falling to Tennessee 2-1 across its series last weekend. This is Alabama’s first series loss against an SEC team, winning six of seven so far.

Game 1: Alabama 12, Tennessee 0

Alabama opened up Game 1 strong, run-ruling the Lady Vols 12-0 in just five innings. Pitcher Jocelyn Briski earned her fourth complete game shutout of the season, allowing only three baserunners across all five innings.

Infielder Brooke Wells started off the scoring for Alabama, smacking a home run to right in the first inning. This is Wells’ 20th home run of the season, making her the fourth in program history to hit 20 home runs in a single season.

Alabama went scoreless after Wells’ opening hit until outfielder Audrey Vandagriff drew a bases loaded walk in the third. Infielder Ambrey Taylor brought home two in the third with a single through the right side. Utility player Alexis Pupillo closed out scoring for Alabama after being hit by pitch with the bases loaded, ending the third 5-0.

Alabama’s luck continued into the fourth when Taylor drew a bases loaded walk to bring home one. Infielder Salen Hawkins brought home one on a bases loaded single through the left side. Outfielder Kristen White ended the fourth with a single through the left side to bring in two.

Outfielder Ana Roman ended the game with a three-run home run to right field, bringing the score to 12-0. This is the freshman’s 12th home run of the season, the most for an Alabama freshman since 2016’s Reagen Dykes hit 12 in a single season.

    Game 2: Tennessee 2, Alabama 0

Coming off an impressive win Saturday, Alabama was unable to hold it down Sunday, falling to Tennessee 2-0 to even the series 1-1. This marks Alabama’s first shutout loss of the season.

Neither team was able to put a run on the board until the fifth inning, when Tennessee’s Gabby Leach hit a solo home run to put the Lady Vols ahead 1-0. Emma Clarke doubled Tennessee’s lead with a home run of her own in the sixth.

Alabama went into the seventh still hitless until Vandagriff hit a single to center to advance to first base. Despite Vandagriff’s rally attempt, Alabama ended the game hitless after a groundout and a pop up took Alabama’s chances at a run away.

Despite Alabama’s less than desirable offensive play, pitcher Vic Moten struck out her personal best in conference play, striking out seven across the game.

    Game 3: Tennessee 4, Alabama 1

Monday’s tiebreaker match looked much like Sunday’s game, unfortunately for the Crimson Tide.

Both teams were caught in a back-and-forth pitching lockout until the Lady Vols snuck off with three runs in the fourth inning to break the spell. Alabama was unable to break free from its scoreless streak until the seventh inning.

This was pitcher Jocelyn Briski’s second loss in the circle this season and her first time allowing unearned runs to be given up, allowing two from Tennessee. Tennessee’s only other run came in the fifth inning on an RBI single.

Alabama’s fate looked grim going into the seventh. The Crimson Tide had come into the series not being shut out by an opponent this season, and Tennessee was about to increase this tally to two.

To save Alabama from this fate and give the Crimson Tide its only run of the game, infielder Mari Hubbard led off the seventh inning with a pinch hit home run. Taylor was then advanced to first after being hit by a pitch and then advanced another 60 feet after a wild pitch.

Alabama was unable to successfully rally, though, facing three straight strikeouts after Taylor’s walk.

Alabama will close out its regular season at home on Thursday, kicking off its series against South Carolina. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
