In a recent emotional meeting at Rate Field, a White Sox fan came face-to-face with her guardian angel, the stranger who gave her a life-saving donation.
NBC Chicago’s Regina Waldroup first shared Christine Todd’s story two years ago. The Plainfield resident was living with polycystic kidney disease, a condition that causes fluid-filled sacks to take over the kidneys and can lead to kidney failure. Christine needed a living donor.
She took her search to the home of the White Sox, with a plea on t-shirts and a banner.
After our story aired, Todd said a couple of potential donors came forward—but one turned out to be a perfect match: Chris Beck, a biology teacher from Virginia.
Beck didn’t even need to travel to Chicago for the donation.
“My mom, she shared the social media post with me,” he said. “I had donated a portion of [my] liver in 2020. She was really excited about that. She was like, ‘Hey, here’s someone else who needs help.’ I went to their donor center near where I live and said, ‘I would like to become a donor, and here’s who I would like to donate to. The surgery happened in Richmond, and my kidney took a flight here to Chicago.”
On Saturday, Todd and Beck attended a White Sox game together, back at the ballpark where the story began.
“I am here today at Sox Park again because of Chris,” Todd said. “Saying thank you is not good enough. There was a lot of uncertainty until you (Chris) came along. I never believed in miracles before, but I do believe that this was a miracle.”
“If I can do something to help another person, I definitely will do it. It is what I would want done for me or any of my kids,” Beck said.
