Alexis Bledel is looking back on her time playing the bookish Rory Gilmore on the hit WB series, Gilmore Girls.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, in celebration of Gilmore Girls being featured in the publication’s list of “The 100 Best TV Shows of the 21st Century,” Bledel acknowledged that the cozy seven-season dramedy has remained beloved, despite ending in 2007. She theorized that Gilmore Girls has held up partly because of Rory’s storylines involving “teen angst” as well as her mother, Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham), navigating being a single mother and a business owner.
“There are so many timeless elements to this show as well. The fast-paced dialogue, which is reminiscent of ’30s and ’40s films. Teen angst. Single mom life, romantic scenes, multi-generational family drama. I think that’s what keeps people coming back,” said Bledel, who reprised her role of Rory for the 2016 Netflix miniseries, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
Alexis Bledel Has Shared How She Was Cast as Rory
During a 2017 appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Bledel noted that she had limited acting experience before she was cast as Rory. The former model explained that she “was a student at NYU” when she auditioned for Gilmore Girls. She said she “was very sick” during the long casting process, which left her irritated.
“They kept calling me back to audition. I think I went like six times. And oddly, I wasn’t a very seasoned actor at all. I didn’t know the process at all. And I got a tad bit impatient. I had a little attitude,” said Bledel during the interview.
Bledel then said she landed the role because the show’s creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, appreciated her attitude.
“Our boss really liked that a lot. She was like, ‘That’s our girl,'” said Bledel with a smile.
In her New York Times interview, Bledel noted that she was just 18 when she began playing Rory. She said she was “really grateful” for the experience and the loyalty of the show’s fans.
“I appreciate fans sticking with us as we evolved and grew within our roles,” said Bledel in the September 2026 interview.
