The hit 2004 reality show The Apprentice, hosted by DonaldTrump, just might be getting revived.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon is looking into a reboot of the series that would live on Prime Video. The updated show would have a small, two-letter change: jr., instead of Donald Trump hosting, his eldest son, DonaldTrumpJr., would be center stage.
Amazon didn’t comment on the show directly, but told the newspaper, “Since our acquisition of MGM, we have had preliminary internal discussions about what’s next for TheApprentice as a property.”
The WSJ reported Amazon MGM Studios head, MikeHopkins, and fellow executives at the company were exploring the possibility of a reboot, noting that Hopkins and his team “began talking about the reboot idea internally early last year, around the time Trump was being sworn in for his second term, according to some of the people familiar with the talks.”
Currently, Amazon co-owns the rights to the series with Trump’s production company, Trump Productions. Originally, The Apprentice aired on NBC but was produced by Trump Productions and MarkBurnett Productions, in 2014 MGM purchased the company. Amazon acquired MGM in 2022.
The original show ran from 2004 to 2017, with Trump hosting the first 14 seasons. Amazon has streamed the reality series, and over time it has been sold into syndication and syndicated streaming
The Apprentice was a competition-based show where contestants were evaluated by their business skills. The ultimate goal was to secure an apprenticeship. Episodes ended with Trump telling the eliminated contestant the famous catch phrase, “You’re fired.”
Varietyreported that insiders say the series is currently “not in development.” Adding that there have not been “any discussions with anyone outside the company” about creating a future version of the show.
The Apprentice was nominated for nine Emmys while on air. It created multiple spinoffs, including Celebrity Apprentice and The Apprentice: Martha Stewart.
Donald Trump was fired from The Celebrity Apprentice in 2015 after he made remarks about Mexican immigrants.
In 2015, the network issued a statement, "At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values. Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump."
Arnold Schwarzenegger took over the final installment of the series, which aired in 2017.
