Ed Smart is speaking out about the ongoing attention surrounding the Nancy Guthrie case, urging the public to focus on verified information rather than speculation. In new remarks made during an interview with NewsNation, Smart cautioned against conspiracy theories and emphasized the importance of keeping attention on credible updates as discussions involving Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni continue to circulate.
“I think that it’s really important to, one, not go into conspiracy theories. I don’t think there’s much value in that. Of course, the Guthries have been looked at," Smart told NewsNation. "[The family has] supposedly been cleared. So that should no longer really be out there in the public, regardless of whether people are searching around the house or not."
Smart's comments come as online chatter about Annie and her husband—the last people to see Nancy, 84, alive prior to her Feb. 1 disappearance, persists.
"I think it's important to keep information coming. Savannah and the family—more information about their mother," Smart continued. "That was one thing that our family continually tried to do was to keep new information coming out. We don't know what law enforcement has, whether they have any DNA that's of any value or not. Sometimes law enforcement really does not disclose what they have and that can be problematic."
"I think keeping Nancy's face out there, more information about Nancy, is really key," Smart said.
Smart has first-hand experience with missing persons cases, as his daughter Elizabeth Smart was abducted at age 14 and held for nine months before being rescued in 2003. Her disappearance sparked a nationwide search and became one of the most widely followed cases in the United States.
Someone in the public recognized Elizabeth while she was out walking with Mitchell nine months after she went missing and alerted authorities. This is likely the reason that Ed says that it's important to keep the story alive. As we've heard throughout this case: Someone out there knows something.
