The next expansion for Final Fantasy XIV has been officially unveiled at this weekend's Fan Fest 2026 event in Anaheim, California.
Nearly two years on from the release of Dawntrail, the latest and most controversial expansion since the game's launch, this sixth expansion has been long-awaited by fans of the game.
As a precursor to Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida's (Yoshi-P) keynote speech to open the event, a teaser trailer showed off a cinematic first look at Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold.
As well as the big reveal, it was also officially confirmed that Evercold will be launching in January 2027.
In preparation, patch 7.5 will introduce a series of new Main Scenario Quests to prepare players for the launch of the new expansion
Although a nine-month wait may seem enormous to fans of the game, who have already waited nearly two years, Yoshi-P joked that it is a frighteningly short time for developers.
That being said, he continued to quip that "I officially give you permission to please look forward to it."
While Final Fantasy XIV remains one of the most popular MMORPGs on the market, reception to the most recent expansion has been mixed, with many players unhappy with the direction of the story and content.
Yoshi-P has been hard at work on Final Fantasy XIV for more than a decade at this point, but has no plans to step down, according to our interview with him last year.
Evercold is proof enough that Yoshi-P and his team are far from done with the game, and players will be eagerly hoping that patch 8.0 represents a return to form for one of the best contemporary MMORPGs in gaming.
