Chelsea vs Leeds Prediction: Can Blues Put Turbulent Week Behind Them With FA Cup Semi Win?

We look ahead to Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium with our Chelsea vs Leeds prediction and preview. Will Leeds pile more misery on their out-of-form opponents?

Chelsea vs Leeds: The Key Stats

Chelsea are the favourites to beat Leeds inside 90 minutes and advance to the final, having done so in 45.1% of the Opta supercomputer’s 10,000 pre-match simulations. Leeds United are featuring in the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1986-87. Since then, Chelsea have reached the last four 17 times, and made the final on 13 occasions. Leeds have lost their last three games at Wembley without scoring – 3-0 vs Aston Villa in the 1996 EFL Cup final, 1-0 vs Doncaster Rovers in the 2008 League One play-off final, and 1-0 vs Southampton in the 2024 Championship play-off final.

Chelsea will be hoping to turn around the dismal form that resulted in Liam Rosenior’s dismissal when they face Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Rosenior was let go after just over three months at the helm, with Tuesday’s limp 3-0 loss at Brighton marking Chelsea’s fifth successive Premier League defeat – all of which they failed to score in.

Their run has seen them fall seven points adrift of fifth-placed Liverpool – who have played one game fewer – severely damaging their hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Is Chelsea’s Season About to Collapse After Latest ‘Unacceptable Performance’?

    2 days ago Matt Furniss

Interim head coach Calum McFarlane, in his second spell this season having taken charge following Enzo Maresca’s departure in January, will hope to quickly lift spirits in west London by guiding them to the FA Cup final.

The Blues have great pedigree at this stage of the competition, having progressed from nine of their last 11 FA Cup semi-finals. Their only two defeats in that time came against Manchester City in 2012-13 and 2023-24.

And despite their string of sub-par league displays, Chelsea are the leading scorers in this season’s competition with 20 goals – seven of which came via six different players in the quarter-final win over Port Vale.

Another high-scoring performance could see them become the first team in FA Cup history to find the back of the net at least four times in five matches in a row, though Leeds will be their first Premier League opponent in the competition this season having beaten Charlton Athletic, Hull City, Wrexham and Port Vale to reach this stage.

Leeds will be doing all they can to stop them, though, having become the first newly-promoted side to reach the semi-finals since Wolves in 2018-19.

Eight different players have contributed to the nine goals that have got them this far, with only Ao Tanaka on the scoresheet more than once. Leeds’ only previous FA Cup campaign with more goalscorers came in 1964-65 (nine) – a season in which they reached the final as a newly promoted club.

Daniel Farke’s side have eliminated Derby County, Birmingham City, Norwich City and West Ham to reach the semis.

Spirits are high following a seven-game unbeaten streak that has earned Leeds a return to the semi-finals after 39 seasons and seen them take major strides towards Premier League safety.

Should they manage to get the better of Chelsea and reach the final for the first time since the 1972-73 season, they will be dreaming of winning their first FA Cup since 1971-72, and their first major trophy since lifting the First Division title in 1991-92.

Leeds are without Ilia Gruev for the rest of the season, but their only other injury concern is Anton Stach, who has been out of action with an ankle problem sustained in the quarter-final penalty shoot-out success against West Ham.

Chelsea confirmed Estêvão would miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, while Reece James and Cole Palmer remain doubtful. The good news for Chelsea, though, is that João Pedro was back in training with his teammates on Thursday, so could be in line for a return after two games out.

    Chelsea vs Leeds Head-to-Head

Chelsea and Leeds have locked horns in the FA Cup six times previously, with the Blues progressing on every occasion – most recently in the fifth round in 2023-24. Only Arsenal (8) have knocked Leeds out of the competition more times than Chelsea.

The Blues have been unable to get the best of Leeds this season, though, losing 3-1 at Elland Road in December before surrendering a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw in February.

    Chelsea vs Leeds Prediction

Despite their lacklustre form and recent upheaval, Chelsea are still more likely to get the job done according to the Opta supercomputer. The pre-match projections saw the Blues win inside 90 minutes 45.1% of the time.

Leeds have a 29.5% chance of advancing to the final without the need for extra-time or penalties, while a quarter of the simulations (25.4%) were level at the end of regulation time.
