Jay Shah-led International Cricket Council is set to undergo a major shuffle in its administrative structure as Wasim Khan is reportedly set to step down as the ICC's general manager, cricket, after four years in the role. Khan took over the role in 2022 after the departure of Geoff Allardice in May that year.
As Wasim Khan is all set to take over a new role, the International Cricket Council will have to announce a new name for this position. Before joining the Council as the general manager, he was a crucial part of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as the CEO for nearly three years.
Khan, a former cricketer, has had an illustrious career in administrative duties in various roles in the past. Currently, the general manager of cricket in the International Cricket Council and formerly a PCB CEO, also served as a CEO at Leicestershire County.
As an official of the ICC, he had to tackle a series of challenges as cricket has witnessed rapid changes in the previous few years. With more T20 and T10 format matches across the globe, the job as the general manager of cricket for ICC turned more challenging than before. Despite the challenges, he has done significantly well in the Future Tours Programme (2023-27) and in the first-ever women's FTP as well.
“One of the main challenges during Wasim's stint at the ICC was an increasingly cramped cricket schedule with more T20 and T10 leagues eating into the space for international cricket. But in the last Future Tours Programme (2023-27), which was finalized during his time, there was actually an increase in the amount of international cricket. The first-ever women's FTP was also unveiled in this period,” ESPNCricinfo informed in a report.
Khan had an impressive domestic career as a batter
Meanwhile, Wasim Khan was the first British-born Muslim to play county cricket. He played for Warwickshire in the mid-to-late 90s. The former left-handed batter played 58 first-class matches and 30 List A matches. He played those List A matches for Warwickshire, Sussex, and Derbyshire. His most memorable stint as a batter came with Warwickshire when they claimed the title in 1995.
Multiple other officials also left the Council in the recent past
The report further suggested that Wasim Khan’s tenure with the ICC as the general manager of cricket will be concluded at the end of June, is likely to take over a new job in July. In the last couple of years, multiple senior ICC officials have left the Council, including Allardice, Chris Tetley (head of events), and Alex Marshall (Head of the Anti-Corruption Unit).
“Wasim Khan will finish at the end of June and is set to take up another role from July. His impending exit follows the departure of several senior ICC officials over the last two years, including Allardice - replaced by Sanjog Gupta as CEO - Chris Tetley (head of events), and Alex Marshall, who led the anti-corruption unit. Tetley has been replaced by Gaurav Saxena and Marshall by Andrew Ephgrave,” the report further added.
