DWTS Judge Carrie Ann Inaba Speaks Out After Medical Emergency on Plane (Exclusive)

Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba spoke out for the first time since revealing her recent medical emergency on a plane—and she did so while opening up about living with an autoimmune condition called Sjogren’s disease.

On April 16, Inaba, 58, shared an Instagram video from inside an ambulance following a scary incident during a flight.

“I was on my way to NY for something I am very passionate about. But had a small ‘medical emergency’ on the plane," she wrote in part. “I very suddenly felt quite ill. And while it seemed like food poisoning, I also suddenly broke out into a cold sweat, got dizzy, and my arms went numb.”

Inaba continued, “While I was locked in the restroom, we were also experiencing turbulence and the flight attendants had been asked to sit in their seats as well,” she continued. “I didn’t want to have anyone else put themselves at risk… but when my arms went numb, it was time to ask for help.”

On Monday, April 20, Inaba—who lives with several autoimmune conditions, including Sjogren’s disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia—shared a health update with Parade.

"I am much better from that," she revealed. "That was, like, sort of GI, whatever, food poisoning, and sudden. But my recovery, because I have Sjogren's, is a little slow. So I'm resting."

Inaba added, "And while I think what happened on the plane was unrelated to my Sjogren's, the Sjogren's is still a part of me as I'm healing from it. And I'm very aware that my body needed to rest after that to recuperate. And I am doing that."

As part of her partnership with Novartis, Inaba spoke about Sjogren's disease to promote the company's Sjout for Sjogren’s initiative (pronounced "Shout for SHOW-grins").

"Sjogren's disease is a systemic autoimmune disease," she explained. "And there is a widespread array of symptoms, and everybody experiences it slightly differently."

For Inaba, her symptoms started with dry eyes, also including back pain—which she initially attributed to her dance career—and extreme fatigue. She was officially diagnosed with Sjogren's disease in 2013.

"I ended up at a rheumatologist, and a rheumatologist is the right doctor to go to when you're dealing with these kind of symptoms that are, like, unexplainable and mystery symptoms," she told Parade. "And he put it all together. He sent me to a Sjogren's specialist ophthalmologist who gave me the Schirmer's test—which is a specialized test to determine the moisture in your eyes and how quickly you're producing water and getting moisture in your eyes. And after that, I was diagnosed."

As Inaba pointed out, there is currently no FDA-approved treatment specifically for Sjogren's disease. "Which makes it very challenging," she said. "So for me, it's all about managing symptoms. And that's why I think community is so important because you can learn how other people are  managing their symptoms."

For Inaba, managing her Sjogren's disease symptoms means avoiding "anything that can cause inflammation in my body," as well as doing yoga, meditating, and doing Reiki.

"I have found that that's very helpful when you hear other people's journey, you feel less alone," she added. "...Having Sjogren's disease, specifically, is challenging because it's invisible and you can have good days where you're functioning really well and no one would think—even yourself included—that you're dealing with an autoimmune disease. "

Still, the DWTSjudge acknowledged that there are "beautiful silver linings" to her journey.

"One of them is that I have a lot of compassion and I've learned to love myself in a way that is very powerful," Inaba shared. "I've learned to speak up for myself. And I think that that's important, and I hope to inspire other people to do the same."
