Local wheelchair basketball player talks about how the sport changed her life

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — News10NBC’s Declan Stablow sat down with a member of the Rochester Wheels, Rochester’s own wheelchair basketball team, who shared how the sport changed her life.

Cait Brogan has been using her wheelchair for about three years now. She said the biggest smile she’s had since then was when she started playing with the Wheels back in January.

Brogan said trying adaptive sports was a goal of hers going into the year.

“It’s been something that’s just really eye opening for me, using different adaptive equipment. Meeting people who are also disabled. It’s really empowering for me and just doing something I loved growing up and being able to do it as an adult. It’s just a fantastic feeling,” Brogan said.

With the Wheels, Brogan uses an adaptive wheelchair she said is easier to move around in than her regular one.

“It was it’s so fast. It’s so smooth. The angle of the wheels is different. So it can take you so much faster, so much quicker. I started spinning around in it, which is something that I can do in my chair. Just take some time. And it takes a lot of effort,” Brogan said.

Brogan is hoping she’ll be able to use one of those adaptive wheelchairs to dance at her wedding in August.

“I want to be able to experience what brides experience when they dance with their husband for the first time. I want to be able to have that kind of joy that comes with that feeling. And I think for me to do that, I would want to use an adaptive chair,” Brogan said.

But those chairs cost almost $6,000. Brogan said her insurance won’t cover the cost, so she started making Taylor Swift themed bracelets to raise money.

She expected to sell a handful, but now Swifties across the globe are showing her support.

“It’s nationwide. I have people asking if I’ll ship to Canada. I have people who ask if I’ll ship to the UK. I had one woman try to order 80 bracelets and I had to be like, I’m so sorry. Like, I can’t make that many,” Brogan said.

Brogan said she’s still got hundreds of bracelets to make and ship out. She’s already raised more than $3,000.

The Wheels’ last exhibition game of the season is Wednesday at Nazareth University.
