Joining Riegert as part of the film’s cast were Burt Lancaster, Denis Lawson, Peter Capaldi, and Fulton Mackay. It was reported that Michael Douglas and Henry Winkler were both pursued by Forsyth to play the role of MacIntyre, but the role ultimately went to Riegert.
Reigert once commented that Local Hero was “one of the best screenplays I’d ever read,” and its storyline ends up being “so exceptionally human in a very funny way.” When it came to working with Forsyth, the actor praised his “devilish sense of humour” and said, “When I met him, I just fell in love with the guy. I was in heaven, literally.”
Beyond the film’s storyline, Local Hero was also praised for its soundtrack produced by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. It led to popularity for the film thanks to the band’s fans, with Knopfler having developed the well-known instrumental rock track “Going Home” as its theme song. It also marked the debut solo single for the singer.
Local Hero ended up being nominated for seven BAFTA Awards in 1984, with Forsyth winning Best Director. Years later, it was recognized by the British Film Institute as one of the best British films of the 20th century and was later given a stage musical adaptation.
