2002 Criminally Underrated Tom Hanks Film Ranked Among ‘Best Movies of All Time’

Rotten Tomatoes has compiled a list of the “300 Best Movies of All Time.” Topping the list are iconic films like The Godfather, Seven Samurai, Casablanca, and Rear Window. However, there are some hidden gems further down the list, like the underrated Steven Spielberg film, Catch Me If You Can.

This 2003 crime comedy-drama starred Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio. The film was based on the supposedly true story of Frank Abagnale, Jr. He was a mastermind of deception who worked as a phony doctor, teacher, attorney, and co-pilot, all before he turned 18. He went on to be called one of the most successful bank robbers in history.

Abagnale was portrayed by DiCaprio with Hanks playing FBI Agent Carl Hanratty, whose mission was to take down the criminal. Christopher Walken, Amy Adams, James Brolin, and Martin Sheen also made appearances in the film. Walken was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 75thAcademy Awards and composer John Williams was nominated for Best Original Score.

Catch Me If You Can grossed $352 million worldwide, making it a commercial success. It currently has a 96% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an 89% audience score. It even went on to become a musical in 2011. It was nominated for several Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical.

As one reviewer said when speaking about the film, “The script is smart, the cast is perfectly chosen, and every element, music, editing, cinematography are top notch. It moves beautifully and has more than a few laugh-out-loud moments along the way.”

Another reviewer raved, “Catch Me If You Can is probably one of the best films amongst Spielberg's minor titles, [which says more about] the man's talent than it says anything negatively about the film.”

The real Abagnale made a cameo in the film as a French police officer. The script was based off the autobiography that he co-wrote with Stan Redding in 1980, which was also named Catch Me If You Can. However, journalists have investigated the claims made in his book and found no evidence to support most of his stories.
