Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mom, Nancy Guthrie, is still missing more than 10 weeks after the abduction from her Tucson, Ariz., home—and a clinical psychologist specializing in criminal behavioral patterns just made a bleak prediction about the 84-year-old.
During an April 12 appearance on The Interview Room true crime podcast, Dr. Gary Brucato weighed in on Nancy's case and the overwhelming likelihood that she is dead after the Feb. 1 kidnapping.

"Statistically, in an abduction, there is a 24-to-48 hour window, during which proof of life is put forward," Brucato explained. "And you want that person out of your hands because you know that the longer you're with them, the more likely it is you're going to get captured. You want them the hell out."
Typically, a situation like this is resolved within a week, he noted. The perpetrator in Nancy's case, however, never offered proof of life, and the investigation is ongoing 10 weeks later.
“I personally think it is highly improbable that she is alive. And also, based on statistics, I don’t even believe that there is an intact body," Brucato admitted. "I do not believe that somewhere you’re going to find her in one piece. In 2026, you eliminate as much of the body as you can because you know that the science is going to catch you.

He added, "I would be absolutely flabbergasted if it turns out there's an intact set of remains buried someplace or laying someplace. I hate to say it, but we have to go by statistics."
Additionally, Brucato shared that, statistically, the perpetrator in Nancy's case is likely male, local, and financially motivated, and that he probably knew her.
Savannah's mother was last seen at her Catalina Foothills home on the evening of Jan. 31, with the Pima County Sheriff's Department—and the FBI eventually joining in—launching its search on Feb. 1. No suspect has been named, despite Savannah offering a $1 million reward in exchange for information leading to Nancy's recovery.
