Gemma Arterton spy thriller Secret Service based on hit novel gets release date confirmed on ITV

ITV’s latest crime thriller starring James Bond's Gemma Arterton has finally been given a release date.

Secret Service follows Arterton as Kate Henderson – a woman who balances being a suburban married mother-of-two teenagers with secretly being a senior MI6 operative heading the Russian desk at the Secret Intelligence service.

However, her life is upended when undercover operations suggest one of the UK’s leading politicians is actually a Russian asset.

Now, it’s up to Kate to find the traitor within the government – and when a brutal murder takes place, her entire team is put under the spotlight.

With her family and reputation at risk, it will take everything she has to keep things together.

The series starts Monday 27 April on 9pm ITV1, with episode 2 following in the same slot on Tuesday 28 April, and will also be available to stream on ITVX.

The synopsis teases: "As trust fractures within the corridors of power, Kate is drawn into an increasingly dangerous web of deceit, where shifting loyalties and personal stakes collide and exposing the truth could cost her everything."

ITV News At 10 reporter Tom Bradby, who wrote the best-selling novel, has also written the ITV series.

Joining Gemma in the forthcoming show is an all-star cast including Rafe Spall as Stuart Henderson, a "charming and ambitious" special advisor to the government and Kate’s husband.

Trigger Point and Happy Valley’s Mark Stanley plays Ryan Walker, foreign secretary for the Labour Party and current frontrunner to be new Prime Minister, while Line of Duty’s Rochenda Sandall stars alongside him as political advisor Melissa Morris.

Also joining the cast is The Responder’s Amaka Okafor as Imogen Conrad, a competitor for the Prime Minister’s position, Dune: Prophecy’s Aoife Hinds as Julie Price, one of Kate’s co-workers on the Russian desk, and Doctor Who’s Alex Kingston as Rose Trewen, the head of security at the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS).

Secret Service starts Monday 27 April at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
