Egypt, Eretria discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation

Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty, and Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Mohamed Farid met on Monday, April 13, 2026, with Eritrean President’s Economic Adviser Hagos Ghebrehiwet and Eritrean Minister of Trade and Industry Nasreddin Saleh to discuss boosting bilateral cooperation.

During the meeting, Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s pride in the longstanding strategic relations with Eritrea and its keenness to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in various fields, particularly in the economic, investment, trade, industrial and development sectors.

He noted that such cooperation supports Eritrea’s national development efforts and meets the aspirations of the two brotherly peoples.

The foreign minister also reiterated Egypt’s full support for Eritrea’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, stressing the importance of building on the outcomes of high-level mutual visits and continuing consultation and coordination between the two countries to boost trade exchange and encourage joint investments.

Abdelatty further affirmed Egypt’s readiness to provide technical support and capacity-building in priority sectors, including industry, trade and infrastructure, alongside supporting the participation of Egyptian private sector companies in the Eritrean market, in a manner that promotes Eritrea’s economic development and enhances regional integration.

He also highlighted the importance of supporting Egyptian companies operating in the Eritrean market and expanding opportunities for Egyptian exports, noting the effective role played by Egyptian private sector firms in implementing priority development projects in Eritrea.

For his part, Farid underscored Egypt’s keenness to deepen investment and trade partnership with Eritrea in light of the promising opportunities offered by the Eritrean market.

He also stressed the importance of enhancing communication between business communities in both countries to promote joint investments and increase trade exchange.

He further emphasized the need to benefit from continental frameworks, particularly the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, to facilitate Egyptian exports to Eritrea and other regional markets.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on a number of regional issues of mutual concern, foremost among them developments in Sudan.

Both sides agreed on the need to preserve Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, support its national institutions, reject the establishment of any parallel entities, and launch a Sudanese-led political process to end the conflict.

The two sides also discussed security challenges in the Red Sea, affirming that the security and governance of the Red Sea remain an inherent and exclusive responsibility of the littoral states concerned with maintaining its security and stability.
