2026 Italian Swimming Championships Preview: Action Begins On April 14th ...Middle East

The 2026 Italian Swimming Championships are upon us, with over 650 athletes headed to the Statdio del Nuoto beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, April 14th.

This high-profile affair spans five days, with most of the nation’s best ready to dive in and gain potential qualification for this year’s European Championships.

The nation of Italy did not send a top-tier squad to the 2024 edition of the European Championships, opting to keep its focus on that year’s Olympic Games in Paris, France.

However, the 2022 European Championsips saw Italy, the host nation of the event, race its way to the top of the overall swimming medal table, capturing 35 pieces of hardware in all, including 13 golds.

Among Italy’s gold medalists then were Gregorio Paltrinieri, winning the men’s 800m free, Thomas Ceccon topping the men’s 100m back and 50m fly podiums and Nicolo Martinenghi earning the top spot in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events.

We already know we’ll have to look to the likes of Simone Cerasuolo to continue the breaststroke tradition, as Olympic champion Nicolo Martinenghi and teammate Ludovico Blu Art Viberti have both withdrawn from these Italian Championships due to injury. Costanza Cocconcelli also announced her absence from the competition.

Somewhat surprisingly, Paltrinieri has opted out of the 800m free this time around and is focusing on the 1500m only, perhaps a nod to his participation in elite open water events as of late.

Several Italians have already taken on some tune-up racing this year, with Lisa Angiolini, Cerasuolo and Anita Gastaldi having raced at meets such as the Geneva Challenge, the Lausanne Swim Cup and the City of Livorno meet earlier this season.

American college swimming fans will tune in to see Sara Curtis follow up her successful NCAA season at Virginia here at this long-course competition. The 19-year-old is entered in the 50m/100m free, 50m back and 50m fly individual events.
