Patrick Henry High School track program looks to grow with a crop of young talent

With a fresh crop of young talent on the team, the future is looking bright for the Patrick Henry High School track program.

Head coach David DeBoskey noted that last year’s teams did not place near the top of CIF, but they did have some strong individual performances.

On the girls’ side, Hannah Aguirre was a top contender in the 1600 and 3200. For the boys’, sophomore Olegs DeFaria placed 21st in the 3200 at the CIF San Diego Section Finals.

In the field events, Natalie Stein finished seventh at the CIF Section Championships in the high jump and returns as one of the team’s key athletes.

“Looking ahead to 2026, we’re excited about a very talented freshmen distance class,” DeBoskey said. “Justin Casalins-DeBoskey, the Western League Freshman Cross Country Runner of the Year, is currently ranked #19 (#1 freshman) and #9 (#1 freshman) in the San Diego Section in both the 1600 and 3200, having run 4:38 and 10:06 so far this season.

“He’s followed closely by freshman Griffin Truex (ranked #2 freshman at 4:47) and freshman Ashton Casalins-DeBoskey (ranked #5 freshman at 4:57). Junior, Jacob Oren-Winkler, ran strongly in 1600 with a top personal record time this season of 4:43.”

Recently, at the Don Jones Bronco Invitational in the Frosh 1600 meters, Patrick Henry’s Justin Casalins-DeBoskey, Truex, and Ashton Casalins-DeBoskey took first, third, and seventh place respectively in the race, showcasing their promise for the team.

Sophomore Owen Liss took third in the UC Classic 1600 meters in 4:42.77, and Justin Casalins-DeBoskey took second in the 3200 meters in the frosh/soph division. His brother, Ashton Casalins-DeBoskey, took fifth place.

On the girls’ side, freshman Helena Giancola — the Western League Freshman of the Year in cross country — is poised to make an splash in the 1600 this season.

Senior Eva Cruz is also running well, and is currently ranked 26th in the section in the 1600 at 5:35. Junior Cassie Casalins-DeBoskey ran an 11:51 in the 3200 at the UC Classic.

“We also feature a talented sprint group led by seniors Akwaeno George, Marquise Russell, and Miles Rattler,” DeBoskey said.

“In the field events, Natalie Stein returns as a senior aiming to continue her success as a top CIF high jumper. Junior Magnolia Clayton is coming off a win at the Runge Invitational with a throw of 110′, and our jumps crew — including Kymani Joseph and Zaidan Gravely — has shown strong potential, with 21-foot-plus efforts in training.

“We’re building momentum across all event areas and are optimistic about competing at a much higher level in CIF this season.”
