Not to take anything away from the Cubs’ performance in this one, but what a rough night for the Rays. Terrible errors, terrible challenges, and terrible decisions. Just a clown show from the jump, and it was … nice to see.

Colin Rea, like Javier Assad the night before, was exactly what you’d hope he would be when filling in. He isn’t going to dominate, but he can mix all of his pitches in any count, commands well, and generally keeps hitters off-balance. You will take five innings like that every single time if you can get it.

Also, keep in mind, this is a guy who had to come in off the shelf mid-game last time out, and then move right into the rotation. No stretching back out. No faux Spring Training as a starter. Just, hey, time to start now, thanks. It makes a night like this all the more impressive.

The Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game is Rea for that reason, but plenty of love for Nico Hoerner on his big night, for Michael Conforto on his bases-clearing shot, and for the bullpen on their four strong innings.
