A Florida woman in her mid-70s was repeatedly stabbed to death while walking her dog in what has been described as a “vicious, unprovoked” attack.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that deputies were called to the South Wood Community in Stuart, Florida, around 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, after neighbors reported that a man was reportedly knocking on doors and acting erratically.
Soon after, neighbors reported that the same man was actively stabbing a woman who was walking her dog. The victim’s name has not been publicly revealed.
“Our deputy, which was already en route to the suspicious person, pulled up and noticed that a civilian had run over to try and assist this female, who was now on the ground, and our suspect was on top of her actually actively stabbing her,” Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said in a video shared via Facebook.

Budensiek said that one civilian intervened by trying to pull the suspect off the woman. However, the civilian was unsuccessful.
“He yelled for our deputy, our deputy rounded the corner, hopped out of his car, pulled his gun out, and immediately our suspect disengaged the female, who he was still actively stabbing when our deputy pulled up in his patrol car,” Budensiek said.
The suspect was identified as 25-year-old Kersten Francilus, and he was immediately taken into custody at the scene.
An off-duty deputy who lived in the area also responded to the scene and tried to help the woman. However, she was pronounced dead soon after.
Budensiek said that Francilus had no known criminal history, and it appears that he had no connection to the victim.
The officer added that Francilus lived with his mother, his wife and a child, all of whom police spoke to after the attack.
“They said that the knife that he had here, which was a steak knife, came from their house,” Budensiek said of the murder weapon.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said that Francilus was charged with murder in connection to the attack.

A search warrant has been issued so investigators can assess Francilus’ home and devices amid the investigation.
“I don’t think there’s anything that could have been done different,” Budensiek said of how the incident played out.
Budensiek also applauded residents for promptly calling authorities about the attack.
It is not currently clear if Francilus has entered a plea or retained legal counsel following his arrest. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to Us Weekly’s request for comment regarding the incident.
