Two people were killed and three juveniles were injured in a crash involving several vehicles on Friday evening in south suburban Chicago Heights, authorities said.
The collision occurred before 5 p.m. near Joe Orr Road and Chicago Road.
Footage captured by NBC Chicago’s Sky 5 helicopter showed five vehicles believed to have been involved in the crash, including several that were heavily damaged.
Airbags were deployed in multiple vehicles, wheels were torn off, and debris was strewn across the scene. Both a silver and black car appeared to sustain heavy damage, as did a silver SUV that came to rest in a grassy area.
Two drivers in the crash were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Three juveniles were transported to area hospital in unknown condition.
The Chicago Heights Police Department Accident Investigation Unit and the South Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team were conducting an investigation. Anyone with information was asked to contact the Chicago Heights Police Department at 708-756-6400.
