Five police officers have been suspended after a bag of guns was left outside the home of London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
A member of the public found the bag, which reportedly contained a Heckler & Koch submachine gun, a Glock pistol, a Taser and ammunition, at around 9.40pm on Tuesday.
The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards confirmed that the bag contained “Met-issued firearms and a Taser”.
“Within seven minutes of the call to police, officers arrived at the scene and safely recovered the items,” the body said.
“At this stage it is believed the bag was misplaced by on-duty officers a short time before the member of the public located it.”
The bag was found on the kerbside close to Khan’s south London home, The Sun reported.
Scaffolder Jordan Griffiths said his pregnant partner spotted the bag and kicked it, before Griffiths took the bag home. He said he originally “thought it might be full of coins and took it inside using both my hands because of its weight.”
He took a photograph on his phone before calling the police.
“When they arrived they were really shocked. They looked through the bag carefully and hurriedly took them away,” he told The Sun.
“I was told they had been left there by one of Sadiq Khan’s security officers, which made sense as he lives here.”
The incident came amid violent disorder by young people in nearby Clapham High Street.
A spokesperson for the mayor said: “This is a very serious incident, which has been referred to the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards.
“The Met must now take all steps to ensure an incident like this never occurs again.”
