Rohit Sharma still needs to improve? Mahela Jayawardene claims MI batter is working on his game

Mumbai Indians (MI) have kicked off their IPL 2026 campaign in a dominant fashion, and a major reason behind that is none other than Rohit Sharma. Just before MI’s second league match against Delhi Capitals, the secret behind Rohit Sharma's stunning form has been revealed.

Even though the former India and Mumbai Indians captain hardly played competitive cricket in the last few months, he surprised everyone with a vintage 38-ball 78 against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium.

Now, Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene opened up on how Rohit actually prepared and entered the tournament sharper than ever.

Ahead of the DC vs MI clash in Delhi, Mahela shared that Rohit had made up his mind long before joining the camp as he was quietly working on both his fitness and batting during the break. MI had several practice matches and match simulations, and Rohit took part in all of them.

Mahela Jayawardene said at the pre-match press conference as quoted by IANS, "Well, I think credit to him; he had a plan and vision obviously. Even though he hasn't played much competitive cricket, he did quite a bit of skill work off-season whenever he had the time.

Then he joined us on our first day of the camp, and we had a chat on how we wanted to start. We did a lot of simulations and had quite a few practice matches that we played. So, he was part of all that.”

Rohit Sharma rediscovers form instantly due to experience

However, Rohit last played competitive cricket in January 2026, but years of experience worked in his favor. As soon as he stepped into nets and practice games, he was in pretty good nick, and the MI head coach said it's in the veins, muscle memory, and how he wanted to go about it.

Mahela noticed that his bat speed and timing were exactly where they needed to be and pointed out that the fluent shots he played against KKR were proof that his preparation during MI’s camp had worked perfectly. He added, “It was a good start for him in the first game, and hopefully, he can continue that. I feel it's a bit tough, the tournament. But he's focused; he's relaxed.”

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians players like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma came into the IPL 2026 after constant cricket with Team India.

Their rhythm was already high because of the recent T20 World Cup and white-ball series. However, Rohit’s situation was different.

The Sri Lankan legend revealed that the Hitman focused completely on fitness for almost two months after his last international games against New Zealand.

Mahela added, “He took those two months to get his fitness right, and then he started doing skill work.”

Rohit Sharma's personal routine helps him regain peak form

Since Rohit Sharma lives in Mumbai, he regularly used MI’s training facility to work on his batting in peace. The head coach shared that the MI’s support staff didn’t involve much, instead they let Rohit follow his own program because he has reached a stage where he understands exactly what his body needs.

MI only provided Rohit the space, the nets, and the bowlers whenever he required them. Notably, the franchise runs special camps for players who are not playing for India regularly, and Rohit used this structure cleverly and prepared for this season.

He signed off by saying, “It's just the guys who are not with their national set-ups or the players who are with their state teams, and some of them are not playing cricket—then we will try in their free time; we'll get them to a camp and do some skill work or whatever we need to do with them." That is how we get involved with our entire squad. So, that's how it goes.”
