A ground stop was issued at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport Thursday evening as thunderstorms rolled through the area.
Around 6:30 p.m., a ground stop was issued for flights arriving at the airport. The ground stop was initially listed to end at 7:30 p.m., however, the Federal Aviation Authority extended the ground stop to 8:30 p.m. shortly before it expired.
The probability of another extension is high, the FAA said.
A ground delay was issued for planes arriving at O’Hare earlier in the day around 5:20 p.m. that is scheduled to last until 2:59 a.m., also due to the thunderstorms. According to the FAA, departures to O’Hare were delayed an average of 200 minutes due to the storms.
A separate ground stop was in place at O’Hare for several hours in the morning as earlier storms moved through the area.
The entirety of northern Illinois is at an “enhanced” risk of severe storms Thursday. The main threats could be damaging tornadoes, large hail, and wind gusts in excess of 70 miles per hour.
