It was a busy day at the Sacramento McClellan Airport's tarmac as dozens of planes, helicopters and other aircraft made their way to the Hawk Fire burning near Reno, Nevada.
"Four times today, the big DC-10s were flying over," Sacramento Resident Tammy Aronson said. "The excitement of the airplanes flying over our house and we just love coming out here and watching them."
Onlookers were taking advantage of the scene, including Aronson, who has a personal tie to the fire fight.
"I hope they're doing some good up there at the Hawk Fire," she shared. "We have great-grandkids that are evacuated, so we're praying that they get it out."
Other aircraft enthusiasts traveled to Sacramento to get a glimpse of these rare firefighting planes up close.
"I'm from Maryland and this is just so new to me-the firefighting aircraft, especially ones that big," Photographer Misho Pehlke explained. "That's just a big deal for me because I love photography, love planes so let's go watch the cool stuff."
There are only four 10-tanker air carriers in the nation and two of them are parked at the McClellan Airport.
Each spent the day making their way to and from the Hawk Fire, carrying with them over 9,000 gallons of water and fire retardant to aid fire crews on the frontlines.
"For a lot of other plane photographers, these are bucket list items from around the U.S." Pehlke continued. "Being able to catch that this many times and be this close to it is just so awesome and really impressive."
Each flight took about 20 minutes from takeoff to the Hawk Fire.
While it is not burning in California, Cal Fire Amador-El Dorado unit sent its strike team to assist, which included five engines, a strike team and a battalion chief.
The unit also sent its Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System and Tanker 914 directly from the McClellan Airport.
"These guys are pretty quick to respond," Photographer JP Davis said. "You see them load and return and the anticipation to wait and watch them take off. Once they take off, you know they're out there doing amazing things."
A fight from above to help those on the ground.
"It's very impactful just to know that they're right in our backyard," Davis said. "They're ready when they need to fight fires. It's really cool to see them out here."
