Cardinals name new head strength and conditioning coach, restructure staff

The Arizona Cardinals have named Kyle Sammons as their new head strength and conditioning coach, according to AZCardinals.com’s Darren Urban.

Sammons has been with the team since 2023. He served as a strength and conditioning assistant and sports science coordinator before his promotion.

He takes over for former head strength and conditioning coach Evan Marcus, who held the role the past three seasons.

The Cardinals also return director of football performance Shea Thompson to the same role.

Buddy Morris remains with the team as its senior reconditioning coordinator. Morris served as head of strength and conditioning from 2014 until 2023’s changes. He took home the NFL Strength Coach of the Year award in 2021.

Arizona also added three new faces to the staff in assistant strength and conditioning coaches Matt King and Rich Pruett. Aaron Sanchez is also aboard as an assistant strength and conditioning/reconditioning coach.

The news of the restructured staff comes after Arizona announced its offseason program would begin on April 7.

How the Cardinals would adjust their strength and conditioning staff was among the main talking points this offseason due to the number of injuries the franchise had in 2025.

Garrett Williams, James Conner, Trey Benson, Walter Nolen III, Will Johnson, Paris Johnson Jr., Starling Thomas V and Mack Wilson Sr. were just some of the team’s impact players who missed an extended amount of time or didn’t finish the year due to injuries.

“We’re looking at everything, our training staff, our strength and conditioning staff, how we train players, how we treat players,” general manager Monti Ossenfort told reporters at the NFL Draft Combine. “Last year was tough. It’s tough when you when you acquire players and you try to build a team and then those players that you’re counting on, for whatever reason, they’re not out there.

“There are two things that suck about life in the NFL. It’s injuries and losing. Unfortunately, we suffered a lot of both last year. We got to find a way to overcome that. We got to find a way to put our players in a better position, to take care of them, to train them so that they can remain on the field.”
