Former Lucknow Super Giants coach Zaheer Khan has backed skipper Rishabh Pant in the shortest format of the game. The legendary Indian pacer backed Pant as one of the finest T20 batters once he gets going and pointed out the century from IPL 2025.
Rishabh Pant is a true veteran of the IPL, as the 28-year-old star has amassed 3500+ runs in the IPL and is often considered a generational talent. However, Pant has not been able to fire to his very best after LSG bought him for a whopping price of INR 27 crore.
Rishabh Pant ended the last season with a dominating hundred but failed to bounce back this season despite being promoted to the role of an opener. Pant was dismissed for just 7 runs and was run out in this new season for the Super Giants.
After another poor start to Rishabh Pant's campaign in the IPL, doubts have been raised over his lack of batting form and the probable end to his career as a T20 batter. Zaheer Khan has his own version of explanations for the veteran cricketer.
"It's an interesting one. To me, he is someone who has that impact on the game across the three formats. Yes, if you discuss it with the numbers, he might not have the numbers to show right now, only for the previous season, which had gone badly," said Zaheer Khan.
"But other than that, he has been ticking lots of boxes in this format as well. It's just that the comparison is being made with his extraordinary Test numbers.
"People are expecting those kinds of numbers or surpassing those kinds of expectations in the T20 format as well. But he has been, what, the fastest to three and a half thousand runs and been around for 8-9 years; he has achieved quite a lot," he added.
"He needs to stabilize in the positions he is batting at" - Zaheer Khan
Zaheer dropped the recent kind of predominance needed for Rishabh Pant to bounce back in the shortest format of the game. He has been out of the Indian T20I side and has not had a good season in the IPL as well, but Zaheer feels that stability in his position can help the LSG captain.
"For T20 cricket, I think he needs to stabilize on the number he has been batting on. Whether it's the middle order predominantly or it's just the top order, the fact is that he can bat at any number, and that's what makes it confusing," claimed Zaheer.
The former LSG coach also backed that he is not a typical star and might be working too hard to contribute over the line that Rishabh Pant usually does in the format.
"Also for him, it's about finding balance in his own approach. He is not a typical player; he is kind of an anomaly in terms of how he approaches the game, likes to be an aggressor, and likes to take on the game.
"In this format, generally, everyone is trying to do that extra bit. He has already been doing so much, and on top of that, he has been trying to better that," he added.
Zaheer Khan backed Rishabh Pant, claiming he has been making the effort
The former LSG coach also pointed out Rishabh Pant practising under the guidance of former legendary Indian left-handed batter Yuvraj Singh. He backed him this season, pointing out that this season will be about him looking to achieve that extra bit.
"He spent some time with Yuvraj Singh recently. He has been making that effort, trying to understand what formula exactly is going to work for him in terms of putting those numbers together.
"You know, in the previous season, everyone was saying that for most of the season, he had not been able to get himself going. But when he got himself going towards the end of the tournament, he got himself a brilliant hundred. It's just that about replicating, he is a kind of player who has been expecting two hundred, three hundred from.
"He is a smart enough guy to figure that out, and this season is going to be all about him achieving that," concluded Zaheer Khan.
