Snapchat opened a pop-up event at the The University of Alabama Student Center on Thursday to show off the app’s “Spotlight” feature and spread the word about their “Under the Ghost” party that night.
The pop-up event was open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and featured a bright yellow truck students could go through to take pictures, pick up goodies and share their Snapchat experience.
Guia Golden, a member of Snapchat’s marketing team from New York, said the company hoped the pop-up event would engage students in the world of Snapchat and Snapchat culture, while also showing off the app’s feature “Spotlight,” which allows users to post and watch short videos on the app.
“We know that a lot of people here love Snapchat for messaging and connecting with their friends, and we want them to know that there are also ways to connect with people beyond your friends by sharing content on Spotlight,” Golden said. “So that’s what you’ll see a lot of in the truck.”
Jada Turner, a freshman majoring in social work, said she and her friend saw the crowd around the pop-up event and decided to check it out.
“When we got here they gave us some tote bags, and we went through the truck that they had, wrote on their whiteboard and took some pictures with the props they had in there,” Turner said. “When we got out, we got to take a picture with the big Snapchat screen, which was cool, and we got a keychain with our picture in it.”
Nadia McCauley, a freshman majoring in public health, said she also went through the event and enjoyed it.
“It was fun. It was cool to do something on campus,” McCauley said.
Turner said she was also planning on attending the “Under the Ghost” party that night, and that she first heard about it from the pop-up event.
Golden said that a line had formed for the pop-up at 9 a.m., an hour before it opened.
“We are so thrilled with the turnout of students. We’re hearing a lot from students about how they use Snapchat to connect to each other. Of course, we know Snapchat is a way for friends to stay connected, but it’s really nice to hear it happening directly,” Turner said. “Personally, I’ve never been to Tuscaloosa or your campus before. We know Homecoming weekend is coming up, and Snap actually has a presence at Homecoming, so it’s cool to be here and check out this iconic school.”
