I’m a true cruiser at heart. Not only did I work on cruise ships as an entertainer for over 5 years, but I also go on multiple cruises per year as a guest. I love the idea of getting to visit multiple places in one trip, all while barely lifting a finger to get to each destination. You go to sleep in one place, and wake up in another. There’s truly nothing like it.
Most cruisers know that each cruise line offers a different experience, and there are definitely pros and cons to each one. Within a single cruise line, there is also a huge variety from ship to ship. I’ve been on a countless number of Norwegian Cruise Line ships–all the way from one of its oldest vessels like the Sun, one of its first mega-ships like the Epic, and now, its most recent ship, the Norwegian Luna. After everything that I’ve experienced with NCL, the Luna is hands down my favorite ship. Here are 5 things that stood out to me on my most recent sailing.

1. Endless Spaces To Sit And Relax

With a ship as large as the Norwegian Luna, which holds over 3,500 guests, you would hope that there would be ample amount of places to sit and enjoy the surroundings of the ship. I’ve found, with some cruise ships (both in the Norwegian line as well as other lines) that this isn’t always the case. Overall, there is an overall feeling of expansiveness in the spaces onboard. Take the atrium, for example. Here, there are three levels with tons of different seating areas to enjoy. Some have desks with electrical outlets, making it easy to work or recharge your devices. Some are cozy chairs that are perfect for curling up with a book, and others are chic chairs to enjoy a cocktail in.

As you explore the ship further, you’ll find that areas like the atrium are all over the ship. Each lounge, walkway, and eating area has modern yet comfortable seating arrangements. My favorite part of the ship with this feature is Ocean Boulevard. This spans deck 8, and is completely outdoors. As you walk the perimeter of the ship, there are tons of different ways to relax. There are couches facing each other, giving groups or families a great spot to chat. Classic sun loungers are lined up in various spots, while larger couch-like loungers hold some real estate as well. There are even infinity pools to cool off in, making this promenade deck feel like the main pool area.

When people think of staying on a cruise ship, they often think about incredibly small staterooms with barely enough room to breathe. While that can definitely be the case on some cruise ships, that is not an issue on the Norwegian Luna. I was able to tour each type of stateroom when I was onboard, and each and every one felt much more open and spacious than other ships.
The reason the staterooms feel this way is because they are thoughtfully designed. There are smart storage solutions hidden throughout every cabin, with large closets that have multiple shelves and drawers, side tables with tons of places to put extra supplies, and bathrooms that can hold all of your toiletries. Even the smallest stateroom onboard, the Studio cabin meant for solo travelers, is spacious enough for a single person. There’s room under the bed for a suitcase, a vanity to get ready at, a large shower, and extra space to move around freely. I wouldn’t have an issue staying in any of the cabin offerings on the Luna.

Boardwalk-Feel Entertainment Areas
Arcade entrance on the Norwegian LunaOn a cruise ship, there’s only so much drinking, lounging and gambling that you can do. Ships become more fun when there are lots of other activities to enjoy (especially during the day) as well. On the Norwegian Luna, there are a few areas dedicated to sports and games, however when you’re in these areas, it truly feels like you’re visiting a boardwalk at an American shore town.
There is a two-level mini-golf course with adorable themes–a perfect activity to play with your family on a sea day. Next to that, a bright purple area called The Stadium has a ton of different lawn-style games to play. A level above that, there are glow-courts, with pickle ball and basketball, plus a multi-level climbing and obstacle course called the Moon Climber. These areas feel less “classic cruise ship” and a bit more out-of-the-box, which I enjoyed. If you want to stay indoors, there is an entire arcade that has every type of game you could think of. Virtual reality games, ski-ball, racing games, and even a small bowling alley can be played in this area. I will note that these indoor games do cost extra, but like any arcade, you can also win tons of different prizes for playing.
Multiple Bars With Different Personalities
When cruise ships first gained popularity, the types of bars you’d see around ships were basically the same. A pool bar here, a champagne bar there, but overall, they just offered quick alcohol for the guests that wanted it. Over the years, cruise lines have gotten more creative with their bar offerings, and I found that the ones on the Norwegian Luna added a lot to my experience as a guest onboard.
There are 11 public bars around the ship, and each and every one of them has their own personality. It makes the idea of “bar hopping” on an evening onboard much more entertaining. Two of my favorite bars onboard are the Swirl Wine Bar and the Whiskey Bar. At the Swirl Wine bar, it’s decorated in a very feminine silver and pink color palette. There are small tables to sit in chic chairs, and there are tablets where you can scan through to find the perfect glass of wine for you. At the Whiskey Bar, it has more of a darker, masculine style to it, with gold details and dark seats. The menu is multiple pages long, explaining the types of whiskeys that can be ordered, as well as craft cocktails that are curated by the bartending team.
Entertainment Options For a Variety Of Tastes
The Norwegian Luna has tons of activities, eateries and areas onboard that are created to appease people of all ages. This idea doesn’t stop at the entertainment, either. The various offerings of entertainment allow every type of cruiser to find something that they would really love.
For the main shows that play in the main theatre, there is an Elton John tribute show called Rocket Man: A Celebration Of Elton John. This is great for just about any age group, as it's filled with songs that most people will recognize, modern technology and sets and captivating choreography. Next, there is a show that was created specifically for the Luna called HIKO: Innovation Meets Wonder. I would describe this show as a sort of contemporary ballet. There is no speaking, only live music and dance and this is great for the theatre-goers and art lovers.
There are also venues around the ship that have their own entertainment. At Syd Norman’s Pour House, a group of musicians have a variety of musical sets that they play. This venue has its own bar, and guests sit at tables while watching the performers on a small stage. They also move through the audience, making it very interactive. They cover things like 90s music, an Eagles tribute and a Fleetwood Mac tribute. Similar to the style of Syd Norman’s, there are musicians that get stationed throughout various parts of the ship, allowing live music to flow through the air as you move from bar to bar.
LunaTique Pop Circus onboard the Norwegian LunaOne of the standout shows for me was LunaTique Pop Circus. This show does cost an extra $45, however it includes four cocktails along with the performance. This is geared towards people 21 and over, and is definitely not a “family” type of show. It’s extremely risqué, and is perfect for couples or friends looking to have a fun (and somewhat naughty) night. The music is well-known pop music, the costumes were created by Chappel Roan’s tour costumer, and choreography is modern and exciting.
