Earlier, there were reports that the Bangladesh National Cricket Team could have new captains, but the BCB has decided to put full trust in Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Litton Das for the long term.

Miraz will now lead the Bangladesh National Cricket Team in ODIs till the 2027 World Cup in the African contingent, while Litton will guide the T20I team till the 2028 T20 World Cup. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has officially confirmed its extension.

Litton’s previous term was supposed to end with the 2026 T20 World Cup. But since Bangladesh withdrew from that tournament due to security concerns in India, Litton’s term remained incomplete. Now, the star batter gets a full cycle till 2028 to rebuild the T20I squad and inspire the fearless playing style to prepare them for the 2028 T20 World Cup.
On the other hand, Miraz took charge of the ODI side last year, and Bangladesh was doing well under his captaincy. The Tigers beat West Indies in October 2025 and shocked Pakistan in the recent ODI series at home. With the ODI World Cup scheduled next year, BCB wants Mehidy to prepare the team without any uncertainty about his role as captain.
BCB says long-term vision needed

BCB's cricket operations chairman Nazmul Abedeen was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo, "Since our T20 captain's tenure ended with the 2026 T20 World Cup, the current T20 captain and vice-captain will continue until the next T20 World Cup in 2028.
At the same time, our ODI captain's tenure is also nearing its end. So, we feel it is very important that the captains can work uninterrupted and follow a long-term vision.”
Abedeen added, “Miraz has already been leading the team for about a year, and with the World Cup approaching, we thought that giving him this opportunity would allow him to organize and strengthen the team even better.
In my view, Miraz has been doing well and has performed strongly for the team. Considering all these factors, this decision has been made to provide a long-term tenure, ensuring that the captains can play a decisive role in shaping and managing the team effectively.”

Mohammad Rafique returns to fix Bangladesh’s spin woes
Meanwhile, former Bangladesh spinner Mohammad Rafique has been brought back as a spin bowling consultant for one year. The board believes that Rafique can guide young spinners with his experience and passion and strengthen the spin attack from the grassroots.
Abedeen stated, “To be honest, we have about eight or ten pace-bowling coaches. But when we look back, we cannot even find three spin-bowling coaches in the country. That is very alarming. We need to develop our own spin coaches. Rafique is almost a ready-made person who can serve this purpose immediately.”
