GATES, N.Y. — A man is charged after police say he attacked two EMTs Saturday in the back of an ambulance, seriously injuring at least one of them.
House of Mercy called for an ambulance after one of its residents ended up on the ground. EMTs showed up to help but ended up having to call for help themselves after police say the patient attacked them unprovoked.

Police say the attack sent both EMTs to the hospital. Gates Ambulance Assistant Chief Daniel DiSalvo said this kind of attack is common.
“We used to brush it off as part of the job, just part of the environment that you work in. But now there’s been some changes, some of the laws, some things that protect us a little bit more,” DiSalvo said.
Some of those changes involve training. EMT training nowadays includes a focus on de-escalation and distancing in violent situations.
“We actually do role playing. So we will create those scenarios in a training environment — and that can be in a classroom, that can be actually in the back of an ambulance, at the station — and try and work those scenarios out,” DiSalvo said.
DiSalvo said they also partner with law enforcement who teaches EMTs how to recognize danger in someone’s body language. But when it comes to creating distance, the back of the ambulance can be particularly tricky due to limited space.
“So we try to de-escalate as much as possible and that is trying to calm them, reassuring. Let them know that we’re a provider. We’re there to help. We’re not there to harm. And, also having your partner calling for police, calling for assistance while we’re still trying to do that,” DiSalvo said.
On Saturday, police say Mirsad Kahric was still in the back of the ambulance when they showed up. Police say they had to use force to arrest him. He was taken to the hospital afterwards but now sits in custody at the Monroe County Jail.
Police say Kahric is charged in the second degree with assault, robbery and grand larceny. He’s also charged with resisting arrest.
