2000s ‘Guitar Hero’ Veterans Announce New Game Packed With Rock and Metal Hits

The creators of the wildly popular Guitar Hero are reviving the era of plastic-guitar rock. Stage Tour, the “spiritual successor” to the 2000s-era video game, is expected to launch Dec. 10 and feature a soundtrack of more than 90 officially licensed songs.

Over the past several weeks, RedOctane Games, the newly formed studio made up of veterans of the original Guitar Hero team, has been sharing bits and pieces of the new rhythm game’s tracklist. This week, however, the company revealed a much larger portion of the playlist, along with preorder details and the game’s accompanying hardware.

So far, the songs that have been confirmed include Extreme‘s “Get the Funk Out,” Slipknot’s “Psychosocial,” Weezer’s “Island in the Sun,” Paramore’s “For a Pessimist, I’m Pretty Optimistic,” Radiohead’s “Just,” and The Rolling Stones’ “In the Stars.”

“Interestingly, there’s no mention of Van Halen yet, but Eddie’s offspring, Wolfgang, is to feature with Mammoth’s ‘The End,’” Guitar World wrote about the news. “It’s a song practically made for a game like this. OG Guitar Hero darlings DragonForce are another big omission (so far), given that the game helped the band explode, while The Beatles are also currently absent.”

The rest of the 90+ tracklist has yet to be revealed. But the game already has the backing of Gibson, the iconic guitar manufacturer founded in 1902 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with more than 180 authentic Gibson, Epiphone, and Kramer guitars featured as collectible in-game instruments. Its virtual world is even built around Gibson Garage in Nashville.

Following the release of 2015’s Guitar Hero Live, the series was shelved. Last year, however, the original developers decided to get back to work on a brand-new game. The team has emphasized that Stage Tour is a new game rather than a continuation of Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, Guitar Freaks, or Rock Band, per NME.

Available for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2, Stage Tour is also now ready to preorder.
