Your Easter basket may be looking a little less full this year after thieves managed to pull off a massive chocolate heist, making off with 12 tons of KitKat bars.
The candy was stolen mid-transport, somewhere in between a European production plant and it distribution centers, Swiss food corporation Nestle told the news outlet Agence France-Presse, per CBS News.
With over 400,000 units of the beloved chocolate treats now missing from the lineup, there's a potential for in-store shortages, and timing couldn't be worse with the candy-centered holiday right around the corner.
"We've always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat," a spokesperson told the publication, playing on the brand's famous catch phrase. "But it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tons of our chocolate."
The truck in question was headed from Italy to Poland when it went missing. It's unclear at this time if the driver was involved, or if they were hurt during the theft, but so far there's no trace of the vehicle, nor the candy.
The parent company noted that "investigations are ongoing," with local authorities and partners in the supply chain all involved. They expect that the stolen bars of chocolate may eventually "enter unofficial sales channels," but they'll remain traceable by the batch codes printed on the packaging for each bar.
If scanned, "clear instructions" will be displayed to contact KitKat and report the discovery.
