Hell hath no fury like a woman who testifies in court about her ex-husband – and that’s exactly why Sarah Ferguson should give evidence to the House of Representatives’ committee investigating Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking operations.
The former duchess of York has so far resisted calls to speak up about her links to the late convicted sex offender, and there is no legal means to force her to do so.
But if she is even remotely on the fence, I’m here to say she should absolutely do it – because it’s the ultimate act of revenge against Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
Not only would it go some way to redress the wrongs committed against Epstein’s victims and set the record straight about the couple’s links to the disgraced financier, but it would allow Fergie to get her own back, after years of coming second to the man who divorced her in 1996.
She described Andrew as “the greatest man there is” in 2015 when he was accused of having sex with Virginia Giuffre while she was underage (Andrew has always strongly denied all the allegations against him); has said their marriage in 1986 was “the finest moment of my life”; and she has called him her “soulmate”.
And while she’s certainly not been too proud to ride on the coattails of the Windsor family name, you could say that she’s been the model ex-wife – in 2018, she boasted the pair were the “happiest divorced couple in the world”.
Fergie is not irreproachable of course – for instance emails surfaced in the Epstein files showed her describing him as a “supreme friend” in 2011, three years after he was convicted of soliciting prostitution from a minor – but look at the different ways she’s been treated since the Epstein files dropped. She has been axed by seven charities she had worked with for years; she is now apparently broke and “sofa-surfing” with friends in New York. She has a litany of failed businesses, bankruptcy and debt behind her and she’s even been stripped of the Freedom of the City of York, which she was awarded as a wedding gift when she married Andrew in 1986.
Meanwhile, Andrew may have lost his royal titles, military affiliations, access to his home at Royal Lodge – which he used to share with his ex-wife – and he suffered public humiliation when he was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office in February, before being released under investigation; but he’s still got a pretty sweet home at Sandringham. And he’s only just been asked to give up the lease at East Lodge, a Grade II-listed cottage believed to have been used as accommodation for his staff. Such cruel and unusual “punishment”, having to give up the digs used by your butler, eh?
Fergie, now, has nothing to lose. She’s hit rock bottom and been humiliated after being nothing but loyal to Andrew for years, despite their split. So, now that he has toppled from grace, it’s time for her to speak up about all she’s lost, thanks in part to her ex-husband. To get her revenge, in court – and to take her power back, like every ex-wife should.
