Phil Collins is opening up about his recent health struggles at 75, including the most harrowing battles of his battle with alcoholism earlier in the decade.
Speaking with theSunday Times, Collins revealed that his excessive drinking initially began after he ceased taking Antabuse, a prescription medication used to treat chronic alcohol use. Previously, Collins began taking the anti-alcoholism drug during a prior period of alcoholism in his life.
After stepping away from the drug, Collins started regularly abusing alcohol, forcing him into the hospital for extensive alcohol intake in November 2023. His time in the hospital wound up lasting seven months.
“There were some decisions to be made about ‘Do we keep Phil on life support?’ kind of thing,” the pop singer said. “My kidneys were packing up, my organs were just seizing up. People were coming to say goodbye. But I don’t remember them coming, I didn’t have no idea this was going on. They were all worried that they wouldn’t see me again. It could all have gone so terribly wrong.”
"I was very lucky to have come out of that," Collins admitted. "Needless to say, I haven’t had a drink since.”
Over the years, Collins has regularly spoken about his past struggles with alcohol abuse, including an acrimonious period following his 2006 divorce from his third wife, Orianne Cevey.
“It left me with a lot of time on my hands to think about what happened,” he explained toRolling Stonemagazine. “I went through a few bits of darkness; drinking too much. I killed my hours watching TV and drinking, and it almost killed me. But I haven’t had a drink in three years.”
As most fans likely know, Collins has also faced several major health issues in recent years, such as neck and back problems that eventually resulted in surgery, forcing him to step away from playing the drums.
