“For too long, families have paid the price for platforms built with total disregard for the children they reach,” Harry, 41, and Meghan, 44, said in a statement to People on March 26. “We stand with every parent and young person who refused to be silenced. Today, the truth has been heard and precedent has been set.”
The former senior royals have delved into social media safety via their newly renamed foundation, Archewell Philanthropies. They expanded more on the ruling in a blog post on their website, writing, “The systems driving our social media platforms have been built to exploit, not protect, and accountability has finally arrived.”
“Today’s verdict in Los Angeles and yesterday’s ruling in New Mexico are landmark victories for families, advocates, and young people everywhere,” the post reads. “Justice has caught up to Big Tech.”
In a span of less than 24 hours, juries returned historic verdicts in a pair of high-profile lawsuits that accused big tech companies of putting children and teens at risk of addiction and mental health issues.
In California, a case was brought by a 20-year-old woman, known as K.G.M., who began using Instagram at the age of 9. Her case against the app, owned by Meta, and YouTube, owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc., claimed the app was designed to be addictive and caused her to suffer from depression and body dysmorphia. On March 25, the jury found YouTube and Meta liable for designing their platforms to be addictive for children and teens, despite knowing it could harm their mental health. The companies were ordered to pay $6 million in damages.
On March 24, a jury in New Mexico also ordered Meta to pay $375 million after it said the company concealed what it knew about child sexual exploitation on its platforms, Instagram and Facebook, and misled users about child safety on its platforms. The case was first filed by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez in 2023.
Meta and YouTube issued their own statements opposing the verdict. "We respectfully disagree with the verdict and are evaluating our legal options," a Meta spokesperson said, per NBC. "Teen mental health is profoundly complex and cannot be linked to a single app."
A Google spokesperson also challenged the verdict: "This case misunderstands YouTube, which is a responsibly built streaming platform, not a social media."
Harry and Meghan have spoken out about the bullying they have personally endured on social media and have dedicated their time and resources to helping others. Their foundation has worked closely with ParentsTogether, an organization protecting children from online harm.

"Social media is not going away," she said during the 2023 World Mental Health Day celebrations in New York City, per Yahoo. "I think by design, there was an entry point that was supposed to be positive in creating community, and something has devolved, and there's no way to hear that and not try to help these families have their stories be heard."
