Ethan Hawke Calls Out Hollywood’s ‘Greedy’ Power Players: ‘Their Lives Are Worthless’

Ethan Hawke is urging a creative revolt against the powerful figures in Hollywood and believes that people who think they have control over the arts will eventually lose their position.

The five-time Oscar nominee expressed his criticism of the effect of money and status on the entertainment industry and stated that artists and audiences will respond.

“I believe in rebellion,” he told GQ, mentioning that he anticipates significant changes in both music and live theater and that people will come together. What bothers Hawke is the fact that in this industry financial power can determine which stories are produced and which are ignored.

He has for a long time been suspicious of the status, money, and influence that shape culture; in the interview, he stated that the projects to which he feels himself most attached are usually not the ones that bring in the highest payments, whereas those which conform to commercial demands are the ones that draw in larger budgets.

“I think people are going to wake up and punch back and there’s going to be massive movements in music and massive movements in live theater and massive movements of people getting together. So don’t worry about the money and the greedy bastards that think they control everybody; they always lose in the end. And they’re all going in the grave eventually. They think they’re winning, but they’re losing because their lives are worthless,” Hawke added.

The actor also raised concerns about the personal cost of being a celebrity. He stated that great fame is isolating and cautioned that continuous praise and public attention make it hard for people to keep up their relationships. For Hawke, recognition is of use when it enables him to make films, but it becomes harmful when it causes people to be separated from normal life.

His remarks come at a time when Hollywood is still discussing the impact of commercial pressures on original storytelling and on the future of creative work. Nevertheless, he stated that younger voices and artists will find means of challenging those who hold power.

During the same interview, Hawke reflected on watching Slacker and Pulp Fiction and feeling that his generation was finding its voice through cinema. He now sees younger artists doing the same, saying that emerging voices are beginning to take shape and encouraging the next generation to step forward.

Moreover, the Before Sunrise star also talked about how friendship and a common passion have influenced his work on Blue Moon, The Weight and on FX’s The Lowdown. He stated that he prefers to produce work which feels meaningful rather than pursuing status, and that he likes a degree of fame which enables him to lead an ordinary life. The interview also includes a discussion of his writing, the five times he has been nominated for an Oscar, and his thoughts on celebrity.
